New Zealand - Aotearoa- Land of the long white cloud - I’m super excited about the coming up WSL event in New Zealand. I lived there in 1997 for 11 months before I went to Australia and Indonesia. There is where I learned English, and many other things in life. I worked in construction, painting jobs and restaurants. I ate so much fish and chips and gas station pies. So many funny stories. I surfed Raglan a lot, I love the place. You feel the energy, it’s a sanctuary, the wave is so fun. I remember when I camped there once, and we woke up super early and the waves were epic. Light off shore wind, 6 feet, only two guys out, one of them was the local legend Daniel Kearopa. I used to surf Piha more often though, a more powerful wave. Another place that impressed me was Whanghamatha, gorgeous, great wave, river mouth left point break with only a couple guys out. All before internet and cellphones. So isolated. Faraway from everything and everyone. The Tasmania Sea is always angry. I used to drive my old 1984 Mitsubishi Galant around the North Island looking for surfing with a paper map. I would find waves and surf by myself places that I didn’t even know the name. New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. It’s stunning. I have a deep love for that country.
