every now and then I get asked the question “why do you like shooting with film”, and each time my answer is a bit different maybe because I can’t even elaborate it clearly the exact reason why..

I started shooting film 8 years ago on 35mm as part of a darkroom class I was taking. It was then I bought my first film camera from a second hand camera shop for $100, till this day I still remember the interaction I had in that shop. I got the privilege to access a studio with darkroom, and I got to develop and scan films on my own. That was also a dark period of time for me, where I believe a lot of people go through in their “self discovery” phase of life. Being in the dark room and spending time with the chemicals hours at a time by myself gave me the chance to meditate, self reflect, and let my thoughts/ideas go wild. And that was the most enjoyable time for me out of everything else. To me, that was freedom.

I then started to shoot on large format film, where I carried the big machine with me, intentionally, to a lot of places I go. Either it was a big empty space, abandoned buildings, motels, playgrounds, studios… my relationship with the medium itself also started to change.

Since I left school it has not been as easy to get my films developed. Also with the popularity rising due to its “vintage look”, the costs of everything involved around it has doubled if not tripled. What I use for film is also entirely different now, mostly as a tool for documenting the little moments, and building memories around my life. With how more and more things are digitalized, not to mention AI generated images or “art” as some call it, I value the authenticity, and the timeliness of it. Each frame is captured as is, and I get to hold onto something that echos to a particular moment I lived through. No I don’t HAVE to have it on film, and no I don’t have to add the extra thing to take with me everywhere I go. But I’d prefer to, that’s all.

I love observing architectures, designs, color combinations of a city, and capturing the random things that happen to come together at a particular moment. Things that arranged by nature, time, and space… things that are not in any means in my control, and the only control I have is the chance to press the shutter.
