@cinedigm_ent Acquires Horror Comedy ‘Shaky Shivers,’ ‘Fast X’ Star @sungkangsta Feature Directorial Debut

EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of Friday’s release of #FastX, in which he stars opposite Vin Diesel and many more, longtime F&F cast member #SungKang has set a North American distribution deal with #Cinedigm for Shaky Shivers, the ’80s-inspired horror comedy that marks his feature directorial debut. The film will hit theaters this fall, with an exclusive streaming release on the company’s streaming platform Screambox to follow.

Written by Andrew McAllister and Aaron Strongoni, Shaky Shivers takes viewers to an abandoned camp where two young women, played by Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer), stumble upon a book of magical spells. Surrounded by classic monsters and drawing inspiration from ‘80s horror films, Karen and Lucy find themselves facing a series of supernatural occurrences after a fateful encounter with an old woman. As zombies, werewolves and BigFoot wreak havoc, the duo must navigate a wild night, armed with an unfamiliar spell book, to restore order before their lives unravel completely.

Kang made the leap into directing at the peak of the Covid pandemic, spending five weeks at a shuttered Girl Scout camp shooting the feature, which is a tribute to the films he grew up loving. Jean Shim and Luci Y. Kim produced the pic, with Nina Yang Bongiovi, Kevin M. Lin, Michael Y. Chow and Brian Yang serving as EPs.

“Cinedigm knows the horror space so well, so as a first-time filmmaker, I’m grateful to know we’re in great hands,” said Kang in a statement to Deadline. “It’s been a great festival run thus far with the film, finding our audiences who have loved the film at the screenings. Winning the Grand Jury Award at @gasparillafilm blew my mind.” by @m4pr

Taking Oscar Sun. to talk w/ writer, director, producer @sheri_sussman for @guidetofilmtvpost blog’s Pro Tip Of The Week. She shares her experience on directing a film during a pandemic & how covid protocols changed their production & post.

Her current project as writer/director @shutterthedoors is a short film starring @ian.buchanan (Twin Peaks) & @billywirth (The Lost Boys) & DP’d by @justinjanowitz . They shot the project in one day @themintla

They were cautious on limiting crew & days. CDC & SAG covid compliant (producer @adamtrex was certified covid officer as req by SAG), everyone tested, wore masks & PPE, social distanced, kept catering & crafty separated. There were temp checks at check-in, ppe for all & meals (from @canters_deli ) were bagged individually.

They kept the environment comfortable, relaxed & safe.

Sheri’s editor, Scott Harvey, & she worked remotely. He’d share his screen, bounce QT files back & forth & zoom. Sheri’s sound designer, Andy Kantos, also did sound remotely, then mixed at covid safe @unbridledsound . Sheri is working w/ colorist @mark.todd.osborne for her color timing. Usually she’d be in the room w/ her team, but due to constraints this was the safest way to work. The reason why she feels this was successful was that these are “long time colleagues who’ve done my other films for me for over 10 years, so we work very well together & it’s not a problem at all.”.

She will have her DCP created @lightironpost for her DCP (its covid protocols listed extensively on website). The film’s publicist is @m4pr @m4pr_mel .

W/ some solid planning & putting together a trusted team, Sheri’s project ran smoothly & new protocols did not appear to affect her budget or deadlines.

2020 @etheriafn lineup announced via @entertainmentweekly: “The 2020 lineup is mind-blowing,” says Etheria Director of Programming Heidi Honeycutt in a statement. “There’s some seriously terrifying stuff in there, as well as some truly beautiful, funny, and heartbreaking films. I’m very excited about our partnership with @shudder and what it means for our filmmakers.” In addition, live digital celebrations featuring interviews, panels, and more with Etheria 2020 filmmakers and fans will be hosted by The Screenland Armour Theater in Kansas City, Missouri on June 20. Doctor Who and Tank Girl helmer Rachel Talalay encouraged women directors to “kick down that glass ceiling” in a rousing speech at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday night. Talalay made the comment in the course of accepting the 2018 Inspiration Award at Etheria Film Night, a showcase of short science-fiction, fantasy, action, thriller, and horror films by female directors. Many of the directors responsible for this year’s films were in the audience, and it was to them, and to the other women filmmakers present, that Talalay addressed her remarks. “I am constantly exasperated that my gender is even a topic of discussion,” Talalay said, after being introduced by Tank Girl star Lori Petty. “But we’re on the cusp now, and I want you, all of you, to use genre as a voice to get under their skins, make your statements, tell your stories, break down their walls, and kick down that glass ceiling.” Talalay also said she was inspired by the scripts of Doctor Who, and quoted a line of dialogue from the beloved time travel show, originally spoken by Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. “I want to end on a more positive note,” Talalay said. “I often find inspiration in the beautiful poetry in the writing on Doctor Who. In a revolutionary move, the doctor has — improbably — regenerated into a woman, against all past predictions. Hooray! In one of her male incarnations, she said, ‘I am and always will be the optimist, the hoper of far-flung hopes, and the dreamer of improbable dreams.’ These are no longer dreams, and they are no longer improbable.
