The caboose, was once one of the most famous icons of American railroading that could be found anywhere across the country on the back of freight trains, until the eighty’s when advancements in technology leading to the introduction of the End of Train Device or (ETD) would mark an end for this icon. Union Pacific 25748 the caboose pictured above is a CA-10 Class caboose constructed by international rail car at its Kenton Ohio plant in October of 1975 for the Union Pacific until its donation to the Troutdale historical society in 1999. Now on static display outside of the town’s original train depot for all to see and enjoy. #caboose #railhistory #unionpacificrailroad taken in Troutdale Depot Rail Museum by @m81enjoyer

The newest item in my collection a WW2 Oregon shipbuilding corporation war bonds pin. It’s a very unique piece from an important time in Oregon’s history the 2nd World War. Oregon would contribute to the war effort in many ways but its greatest contribution would come from the various shipyards along the Willamette and Columbia rivers. But specifically for Oregon shipbuilding one of the three emergency shipyards constructed by the Keizer corporation built for wartime shipbuilding needs with it being the first emergency shipyard built soon followed by Vancouver and Swan island. it would construct over 600 victory and liberty ships by its over 30,000 workers during the course of the war from its location along the Willamette in the St. John’s neighbourhood. With its first and most notable ship completed a liberty ship with the name SS Star of Oregon unfortunately being sunk by German U-Boat U-162 in 1942 off Tobago in the Caribbean. Sadly Oregon shipbuilding would shut down following the end of WW2 closing an important chapter in both Portland and Oregons history. with the location today housing the site of radius recycling St John’s facility.

Some new additions to my ever growing Military patch collection and from a very interesting and well forgotten Cold War naval facility up on the Aleutian Islands. NAS Adak would play an instrumental role during the Cold War in the surveillance and monitoring of Soviet air and maritime activities both undersea and on the air with it being home to one of the main SOSUS facilities in the Pacific where they would track Soviet submarines operating from petropavlosk, along with hosting air assets in the form of P-3 Orion’s who’s goal was to conduct anti submarine warfare and maritime surveillance of Soviet vessels. But following the end of the Cold War the base would be decommissioned and shut down in 1997 under Brac marking the end of the US Navy Activity’s on the island with it being handed back over to the state of Alaska drawing to an end of this once important now forgotten base. by @m81enjoyer

Throwback picture to the last time I was in Klamath falls back in 2023 to visit family but the highlight for me is the Klamath county museum which really is a gem and interesting place to see. But my favourite thing about is that it’s home to a very unique and rare piece of military equipment to see here in the US a Mauser M1918 TankGewehr rifle. taken in Klamath County Museum by @m81enjoyer

I was hiking in Washington park when I stumbled upon the abandoned tracks of the zoo railway that ran down through Washington park to the station near the Rose garden. It’s kinda sad to see its current neglected state of the line. I still remember when it was in operation and actually riding it down to the rose garden. Does anyone else still remember riding down this line when it was open. taken in Washington Park, Oregon by @m81enjoyer

Had the chance to visit Cape Meares lighthouse awhile back, she was affectionately known "the little iron giant" earning this nickname from the cast iron materials used in her construction and from her size as the smallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast. Equipped with a first order fresnel lens one of a few on the oregon coast equipped with one, made in Paris and originally using oil burning candles until its electrification in 1934. Her operation would begin in 1890 for the US lighthouse board later lighthouse service until its absorption into the US Coast Guard in 1939 until its automation in 1963 and subsequent decommissioning for its modern counterpart till its retirement in 2014 by the Coast Guard. taken in Cape Meares Lighthouse by @m81enjoyer
