Becoming rentABLE Ambassador Maddie recently traveled from Alabama with her mom and service dog Arlo to experience the beauty and accessibility of Arkansas State Parks. First stop? DeGray Lake Resort State Park!

From smooth pathways and adaptive activities to accessible lodge accommodations, Maddie found the parks thoughtfully designed for visitors of all abilities. Her journey is just one example of how Arkansas is making nature more inclusive for all.

After enjoying their outdoor adventures, the trio headed home—even Arlo was contentedly exhausted from an unforgettable Arkansas expedition!

“But we cannot simply sit and stare at our wounds forever”
-Haruki Murakami

My disability story began when I was 12. I was diagnosed with asthma and put on medication for it, which has since completely changed my life.
I went years without any side effects until February 2020, when I was 14. At this time, I developed a tremor in one of my legs and had trouble walking. I was evaluated by multiple doctors through many different hospitals, and no one could explain what was happening. The neurological symptoms I was experiencing quickly progressed, and I became partially paralyzed from around my belly button down.
Eventually, I received a call from my asthma doctor, who let me know that the medication I was taking was being reevaluated by the FDA for the second time. This reevaluation was due to the medication causing neurological side effects in many adolescents.
After finding out this information, I immediately stopped the medication, but the damage had already been done. I was attending PT 2-3 times a week and was able to regain some strength throughout my stomach, but I still experienced severe atrophy throughout my legs. With this atrophy, I started having dislocations of my hips, knees, and ankles from simple things such as sleeping. The pain was horrendous and I spent most of my time in bed carefully propped with pillows. Yet, there was still no explanation and I continued PT.
Eventually, I was referred to a new PT after being diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, which I had experienced symptoms of for my entire life. She did her initial evaluation and asked if I had ever heard of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I hadn’t so she explained, and it was everything I had been experiencing.
Throughout the next few years, I was able to regain strength in my legs and find a medication regimen that works. I have experienced many health setbacks related to my disability such as kidney infections, staph infections, surgeries, and even liver failure. Despite all of this, I have regained enough function to walk short distances, live alone, attend college, and prioritize doing the things I love.
