A smile is a sign of happiness….until you learn how easy it is to fake it. Which is something I mastered over time. Asking for help was the last thing on my mind. It felt weak, scary, embarrassing and all sorts of other things. However, there were always other signs that a fake smile can’t hide. I became this new version of myself that I, and my family, didn’t recognize. There was no other option than to put my pride aside and vocalize how I was feeling inside. Which was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

I now know that asking/receiving help isn’t something to be ashamed about. It is actually very powerful, brave and ironically selfless.
In highschool I created a photo album titled “reasons”, which feels silly because why should I have to remind myself of all the good things I have? Why should I have to go out of my way to look at some pictures in order to not make a life altering decision? Although I felt this way, it was something that really worked for me. Crazy how something so simple can pull you back out of the dark even if it’s just for a few days, hours or minutes. As simple as looking at a few pictures is, this was what saved me. My family. My friends. My coaches. My support system. And the beautiful thing about this is that everyday my album grows. My reasons grow.

Today is the start of suicide prevention month and this is a little reminder that a smile can hold a lot of weight that you can’t see from the outside looking in. Check on your people. Be kind. Be someone’s safe space. And if you are the person going through this, find your reason. They are always there, sometimes you just have to look a little harder. And above all, always remember Jesus has a beautiful plan for you.🩵 by @m_steiner27
