When Kinderdijk comes alive after dark. ✨

During the Illumination Week at Kinderdijk, the iconic windmills are transformed by light, creating a magical contrast between the deep blue evening sky and the warm glow of the mills.

I spent some time capturing different perspectives — from the classic view along the water to intimate compositions with reflections and lily pads in the foreground.

The city never really stops. Even at golden hour, when the light turns everything warm and the Erasmus Bridge glows against a dramatic summer sky — Rotterdam keeps moving. Trams, traffic, and that unmistakable skyline, all framed by a red light that says: pause for a moment and take it all in.

Spring painted the Dutch countryside in every shade of gold and green.

Two frames, same magical morning — one wide to soak it all in, one closer to let the old tree and that thatched roof tell their own story. Shot at Werk aan de Groeneweg during the first light of a perfect April morning, where rapeseed fields met still water and a sky that simply refused to behave itself.

Sometimes a location gives you so much that one frame just isn’t enough. Which composition speaks to you — the wider view or the tighter one?

Rotterdam never fails to impress — especially when the golden hour light catches “De Brug” just right.

This iconic building earns its name: designed by JHK Architects and inspired by the nearby drawbridge De Hef, it’s literally built like a bridge — a steel-and-glass structure on 25-metre-high stilts, straddling a historic factory below. All materials were transported via the Maas, assembled next to the Nassaukade, and then rolled into its final position.

Since 2023, the building has a new resident: JEX, one of the fastest-growing tech companies in the Netherlands. From margarine to software — De Brug keeps reinventing itself, just like Rotterdam.

Rotterdam doesn’t just have a skyline — it is a skyline.

Open Roof Days gave me access to some of the city’s most extraordinary vantage points, and I couldn’t stop shooting. From raw industrial rooftops to sleek modern terraces, every elevation told a different story about this city.

There’s something about looking down at Rotterdam that makes you fall in love with it all over again. The geometry, the contrasts, the endless architectural ambition — it all clicks into place the moment you’re above it.

Rooftops, skylines, and stories written in steel and glass.

Rotterdam’s Dakendagen gave me access to perspectives most people never get to see — standing above the city, watching it breathe. Every rooftop has its own character: raw concrete next to sleek modern curves.

This weekend I’ll be back up there with my camera. New angles, new light, new stories.

The city never looks the same twice.

The Tunnel of Spark is a super fun interactive art installation in the pedestrian and bicycle tunnel on the Boompjeskade in Rotterdam. It opened in March 2025 and transforms that previously somewhat grim tunnel into a colorful “pinball machine” full of light and sound. Highly recommended to visit!
