155. SALMAN TOOR: A SPACE BETWEEN FANTASY AND FREEDOM.

Someone Like You, Courtauld Gallery - London.

M-A: 'Toor's green period, surely a nod to Picasso's rose and blue, evokes the nocturnal barlight of fluorescent freedom - as to be bathed in an Absinthe hue - where all races become alien, and the outsider becomes central to a seemingly endless proposition of nighttime adventure. Where possibility and probability unite without the threat of the cold light of day exposing reality’s returning sobriety.' @byjoerichards

154. OFE AMPONSAH: A SPACE BETWEEN PROTECTION AND FREEDOM.

Kubolor’s Dream, Le Parlour - LONDON

‘For me, making the work is not always about having all the answers. It’s about working through those questions and allowing them to take shape through the materials. In Kubolor’s Dream, a lot of that comes back to identity, freedom and the tension between who society expects us to be and who we want to become. In a way, the time I spend making each piece also becomes time I spend understanding myself.’ OFE AMPONSAH

153. ANSELM KIEFER: A SPACE BETWEEN STORM AND STILL.

Anselm Kiefer, Nymphäum, Thaddaeus Ropac - PARIS PANTIN.

M-A: 'A scene pigmented with the oxidised coppers of science - not studied in laboratory theory but gleaned from lived experience - for the colours of Kiefer bleed with the rusted melancholy of wounds deeply cut and tender to touch.'

152. PICTORIALISM - A SPACE BETWEEN: FOCUS AND FIX.

PREVIEW

Light and Magic, The Birth of Art Photography, Tate Modern, London.
Interview with curator Genevieve Barton.

‘Pictorialism lies in its fundamental redefinition of photography as an artistic medium. At a time when photography was often understood primarily as a means of mechanical reproduction or documentary record, pictorialists asserted the camera could be used to express subjective experience, evoke emotion, and create images with the same aesthetic ambition as painting and drawing.’ Genevieve Barton.

Light and Magic: The Birth of Art Photography, Tate Modern, Thursday 15 Oct until 21 February 2027.

151. ROBERT RYMAN: A SPACE BETWEEN STROKE AND SURFACE.

Robert Ryman: The Real Thing,
Barbican Art Gallery - LONDON.
Interview with curator Wells Fray-Smith.

‘White enables Ryman to make painting itself visible. When you see a painting in white, it offers up texture, stroke, edge, line. He wasn’t interested in white as a colour – white is not the content of the work – but was interested in what it reveals to our vision.’ Wells Fray-Smith

Daido Moriyama, Lettres d'amour à la photographie, Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson - PARIS.

M-A: 'The blur of Moriyama is to sense with adrenaline, of the feral gaze of a wild dog.
Starving, and searching for sustenance within the refuse of a city lost. Nocturnal, disruptive and dragging - scraps, glistening, clattering as debris. Extracted - gnarled and amassed - as the reclaimed remains of identities found.'

Ana Mendieta, Tate Modern - LONDON.

‘Like the flowers in her diaries, the film strip is here profoundly indexical. Abraded, deep furrows live on,‘ fossilised by light on the film emulsion’. Filmmaker, carpenter, and sculptor sit side by side, each in their own way pulling time into space.’
