Many colleges are still accepting applications until January or February. If you have not done so already, now is the time to write your application essays! A good college application essay highlights the features that make you stand out, whether that be volunteer experiences, extracurriculars, or simply the character qualities and goals that define and drive you. This is your chance to paint a strong picture of yourself with words and convince the college of your choice that you are an excellent candidate to represent them as a student.

Feeling stuck? I'm here to help!

I offer college application tutoring sessions at a rate of $40/hr. I will help you review your chosen school or program's requirements and help you frame an application letter or essay that frames you in the best light and propels you towards your academic and career goals.

If you already have an essay and just want to make sure your grammar and usage is professional and polished, I offer proofreading services at $0.02/word. I review your essay for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage using track changes in Microsoft Word or suggested edits in Google Docs, allowing you to view and accept all changes.

If these services sound just right for you, send me a message and let's get started!

I recently had the opportunity to work as a copy editor and proofreader on this unique and exciting project! With beautiful oil paintings by Carl Bork and a text written by Victor Geremia, The Gunpowder Trail tells an exciting story of the Wild West. It was originally presented as an immersive multimedia art gallery experience at Bork & Watkins Gallery in Salida, Colorado and will soon be released as a gorgeous full-color collector's book.

I'm still here.
I started a full-time position in August and have had less time and energy to focus on social media since then. That said, I have been continuing my proofreading work on the side, focusing mainly on academic proofreading, particularly with English language learners. If you are interested in a quote for proofreading or editing work, please feel free to reach out!

Copy editing and proofreading are two separate services that come in handy at different points along your writing journey. Proofreading comes at the very end, right before you send your work off to the printer. At this stage, you've edited your work extensively, reworded awkward sentences, tidied up messy paragraphs, and now you just want to make sure that you correct any errors that were introduced in that process and that any remaining technical issues are corrected. These include the following:

🖋️ Punctuation
🖋️ Capitalization
🖋️ Spelling
🖋️ Double spacing
🖋️ Formatting

For some, this may also include checking pagination and other similar issues. Do the chapters match the numbers in Table of Contents? Is the formatting of the chapter titles and section breaks consistent? Are there any places where the font is inconsistent with the rest of the book?

Hiring a proofreader allows you to introduce a fresh set of eyes to your work. Proofreaders are trained and experienced in spotting these subtle errors from an objective standpoint. Their goal is to elevate your writing while preserving your unique voice as an author, and they allow readers to experience your work without being distracted by the occasional typo or formatting error.

If you are interested in proofreading services, I offer a free consultation in which I review the first 1,000 words of your book to determine whether my Full Proofread package is a good fit, and for you to determine whether my style and expertise are a good fit for you. We can meet over Zoom to discuss your work, goals, expectations, and timeline. From there, we will determine how to move forward to reach your goals!

My proofreading rates start at $0.015/word, and are subject to change based on the scope and scale of the project and on accelerated deadlines. Please feel free to message me for more information at melanieabramofeditor@gmail.com.

Today author B.G. Harvey and I discussed his newest book, Masterkey, and touched on some things like the writing process, worldbuilding, and character development.

I discovered after the fact that my video quality was absolutely terrible, so I apologize for that! I figured out what the problem was so for our next discussion the video should be much clearer! by @mabramofeditor

Last year I was approached by my cousin, author B.G. Harvey, with a proposition: "Would you be interested in editing my next book?" He had just come out with his first novel, The Quill and the Spear, and his next work was slated to come out within the next half year. Up to that point, I had done some editing and proofreading for academic papers, personal statements, and so on, mostly in a TESOL context, and it was something I loved to do, but I had never allowed myself to believe that I could call myself "an editor" or "a proofreader." But with this request, and B.G.'s belief in me, all of that changed.

It was an absolute honor to be entrusted with the epic cyberpunk adventure that is Masterkey. I learned so much throughout the rounds of editing and proofreading, and fell in love with a host of amazing characters in the process. And now, finally, this amazing novel is available for everyone to discover. As of January 15th, Masterkey is available on Amazon in both print and Kindle formats. Waste no time and go order yourself a copy!

~~~
@b.g.harvey and I will be hosting a series of Instagram Live discussions, starting this Saturday, January 28th, at 1:00 P.M. Eastern. We will cover topics such as the inspiration for Masterkey, the writing and worldbuilding processes, advice for aspiring authors, and more. We may even dive into the philosophies and ideas within the story of Masterkey, such as the future of AI and neurotechnology. Don't miss it!!
Already read Masterkey? Send us your burning questions and fan theories! They may end up being featured in our discussions!
Books, books, books! When I walk into a bookstore, I often feel overwhelmed at how many books there are in the world, and how I'll never be able to read even 1% of them. And then, in a cruel twist of fate, I get into a mood like I've been in for the last month in which I can't seem to settle into any book I pick up. That is, besides my current proofreading project, which is set to release very soon-- I'm on my third read-through and I am enjoying it just as much this time as I did the first round (go follow @b.g.harvey already!!!) Perfect pacing, characters that feel alive, shocking twists, exciting action scenes....
But I digress.
The point of this post is that I am looking for good fiction recommendations! I like a wide range of genres: science fiction, historical, magical realism, fantasy, etc. Send me your recommendations! What is your favorite fiction book you read in 2022, and why should I read it?
I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful holiday. I am currently catching my breath after finishing an exciting editing project last week (keep an eye out for a mid-January release!) Time to buckle down on my @knowadayslearning proofreading course and maybe work on some writing of my own.
You know you're a nerd when "treating yourself" equals buying a course or class.
I am excited to announce that I am furthering my education by taking the CPD-accredited course Becoming a Proofreader, from @knowadayslearning. My proofreading and editing knowledge has largely been self-taught, but this course is allowing me to further my knowledge both of the industry and of the ideal practices that will make me a more successful proofreader. I'm 17% in and I am already learning so much.
While I work on my course, I am still accepting essay and cover letter clients immediately and longer form projects (novels, dissertations, etc.) beginning January 1. Please drop me a message if you would like to discuss a project!
