Huge thank you to NARA for having us and creating a space for connection, learning, and real conversations in anesthesia. And a special shoutout to Dr. Cansino, your lecture was one of those that sticks with you. A powerful reminder that not every anesthetic complication is what we think, and that understanding the physiology behind it can change outcomes.

What looked like a routine pediatric induction quickly turned into a reminder that not every anesthetic complication is what we expect. Unexpectedly deep anesthesia at low MAC, lactic acidosis, and bradycardia without hypermetabolic signs… this wasn’t MH, this was mitochondrial dysfunction.

His lecture on mitochondrial disease and anesthesia really brought this to life:
⚡ Volatile sensitivity can be the first clue
🧬 Complex I dysfunction changes everything
🚫 The wrong agent can push patients into metabolic crisis

Cases like this are why understanding the why behind our anesthetics matters. It’s not just pharmacology. It’s physiology, genetics, and vigilance at the bedside.

From cases like mitochondrial dysfunction to the bigger picture of patient safety, this is why we keep learning, showing up, and growing together.

Three Filipino CRNAs. One extraordinary honor. A shared legacy of excellence.

Among more than 3,600 Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing worldwide, only three are Filipino Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists—a remarkable milestone for our profession and our community:

The first: Dr. Dan Lovinaria, DNP, MBA, APRN, CRNA, CHSE, ANEF, FNAP, FAANA, FAAN.

The second: Dr. Tony Umadhay, PhD, APRN, CRNA, FNAP, FAANA, FAAN.

The latest and third: Dr. Nelson Aquino, DNP, APRN, CRNA, FAANA, FAAN.

Their shared connection extends to the Filipino American Nurse Anesthesiology Society (FANAS), where their service spans founding leadership and former and current board membership. Through FANAS, they have helped build a community dedicated to mentorship, professional advancement, and elevating Filipino voices in nurse anesthesiology.

Induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing recognizes extraordinary contributions to nursing and health care. The FAAN distinction honors lasting impact and carries a responsibility to continue advancing the profession, influencing health policy, and improving lives.

For these three Filipino CRNAs, this honor also represents pride in our heritage and inspiration for future generations. Their achievements demonstrate that Filipino nurses and CRNAs belong among nursing’s most distinguished leaders and that leadership creates opportunities for others to follow.

🫀 There’s something especially rewarding about teaching cardiac ultrasound to learners at the beginning of their anesthesia training.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to spend the day teaching our first year student registered nurse anesthetists the foundations of focused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS). 🩻

We started with the fundamentals of transducer orientation, image acquisition, and optimization, then progressed through the core transthoracic views, cardiac anatomy, ventricular function, valve motion and coaptation, volume assessment, and integration of ultrasound findings with the clinical picture. 🫀🔍

The goal isn’t simply to teach students how to obtain a good image. It’s to help them understand what they’re seeing and begin asking the more important question:

💭 “How does this change what I do for my patient?”

This day was particularly meaningful to me as a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE). My involvement with the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), along with the work we are doing through the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) to advance cardiac ultrasound education for CRNAs, continues to reinforce how important it is to build these skills early. 🫀🎓

Introducing cardiac POCUS in the first year gives us the opportunity to scaffold learning throughout the nurse anesthesia curriculum. Students can begin with foundational image acquisition and interpretation, then build toward increasingly sophisticated perioperative cardiac assessment as their clinical knowledge and experience grow. 📚➡️🩺

For me, this is where three things I am passionate about come together: echocardiography, nurse anesthesia, and education. ❤️

One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching students go from searching for their first parasternal long axis view to recognizing cardiac structures, understanding the physiology, and realizing just how much information can be obtained at the bedside.

The future of perioperative cardiac ultrasound starts with education. 🫀🩻🎓

The full circle of being an educator. 🎓✨

One of the things I love most about education is seeing every stage of the journey at once.

👋 Welcoming a new class and all the possibilities ahead.

🧠🫁 Sharing knowledge at AANA Annual Congress through our processed EEG and advanced airway workshops.

🤝 Spending time with incredible faculty, colleagues, and students who make this work so meaningful.

🎉 And finally, celebrating our graduating class as the NCE passing results start rolling in and they officially become CRNAs!

From welcoming students at the beginning of their journey to watching them cross the finish line…it’s a great reminder of why we do what we do. ❤️

AANA Annual Congress 2026 💙✨

What a week of connection, leadership, mentorship, and community! From meaningful conversations and inspiring educational sessions to celebrating accomplishments, welcoming future CRNAs, and creating memories together, Boston reminded us why gathering as a profession matters.

FANAS was proud to show up, represent, and connect with CRNAs, SRNAs, RNs, colleagues, and friends from across the country. 🇵🇭🇺🇸

We celebrated our leaders, strengthened old friendships, built new ones, supported the next generation, and shared plenty of laughs along the way. Because Congress is about more than education, it’s about finding your people and remembering that community and opportunity grow when we come together.
