PSA: if you have kittens but are unable to find homes for them, please please take them to a trusted rescue organization! (and spay/neuter parents)
Kittens will be kept safe no questions asked, looked after and matched with a forever home 😻.
We and Brie were lucky, but it could have ended very differently...
Kittens who are abandoned with no prior outdoor experience are terrified, are very likely to get hurt, homeless and pregnant or fall to predators!

One year with Brie - part II 🫶

Here are a bunch of firsts for our newest family member!
Which is your favorite?

For the first six months we spent lots of time bonding, training, figuring out allergies and for Brie to overcome fears of abandonment and fears of the outside world.
She was so brave!

Flying with kitty ✈️- Part II
Check out our flight series in Travel highlights!

Flying with kitty is more than just flying…
Here is a list of some training and
steps to consider first:
(We’ll go over them in more detail next posts)

- train your kitty to be comfy in the airline approved carrier (every time before a trip);
- check with your veterinarian if there are concerns for your kitty re. flying, check requirements for your destination and discuss calming medication options (test ahead of time and have them with you just in case!)
- practice travel in the airline approved carrier (by car or however you get to and from the airport if possible)
- think about going through the security check: the carrier has to go through separately so you will have to hold your cat.
- think about your kitty needing to 💦 or 💩 on the go

Mac has been on many flights across Canada (-2 trips per year and she’s almost 6; that’s over 20 individual flights 🙀). This guide describes tips based on our experience. It is likely not exhaustive but we hope it’s helpful 😻.

The struggle is real 😹

Turns out Brie is not a natural shoulder cat… or riding on top of the backpack.
that’s ok! It’s a really helpful skill for safety on adventures so we will be signed up for at home lessons 😻

Chilling at the beach 🐚

The beach is daunting for most kitties and takes practice to get used to.
It’s exposed
It’s windy
But a fun place to explore once you work up the confidence.
We like this specific one which has places to hide (pics 2 and 3) until you get comfortable (pic 1).
Did you spot CatDad and Mac? (pic 4).

Mac has not found her groove lately with walking when on adventures away from home. We always let them opt into walking so it is fine but I can’t help feeling she may be missing out.
We think it’s in part to do with a bigger focus on training Brie and because all places we can get to are busier. Since her happy place is the forest we will have to plan a forest adventure soon! A black and white cat wearing a harness and leash relaxes at the beach by @mac_fabcat

How do you face a new challenge? Go slow or dive right in? Mac instinctively jumps, but Brie likes to try all the options when learning a new skill 😹.

This is Brie’s second summer season of hiking and she’s still learning a lot. As you see here, we’re guiding her where to go and using the same keywords (come, jump) to highlight the actions. We make sure she goes through learning in her own time, along with positive encouragement!
Next stream crossing, she’ll know what to do! 🙌

Brie did walk a bit during this hike but also
enjoyed some quality chillax time in the backpack as this was hot, a steep climb, and very windy at the top!

T.R.E.A.T.S of course!
🔉 Sound on for cute slurps

For every big adventure or hike that includes driving to our destination, we always have midway snacks and a snack or treat when we get back to the car 🚙.

This helps Mac and Brie for multiple reasons:

- stay hydrated 💦
- positive association with their adventures especially if they are out of their comfort zone 🙌
- signals when we’re half way there 🛤️
- meeting back at the car = treats signals the end of the adventure and teaches them a treat awaits at the car in case they got lost (this has never happened but could be useful in an emergency!) - and yes, they do know when they are getting back to where the car is on out and back trails 👍.
