If KDP is listed as your publisher, people can tell you have a DIY book.

Self-publishing is homemade, but your book shouldn’t look amateurish.

The publisher is whoever owns the ISBN numbers. If you use Amazon’s free ISBN, your book shows up as “Independently published.” That’s a big sign of homemade so the book better look professional.

The fix: buy your own ISBNs (from Bowker in the US) and publish under your own imprint. You can set one up as a DBA under your company. That’s how I became a publisher long ago with Spark Social Press.

It’s still 100% yours. It just looks a lot more legit.

Writing a book is maybe 20% typing and 80% talking yourself back to the page.

The doubt. The “who am I to write this?” The chapter you’ve rewritten four times. Your body feels all of it before your brain catches up.
