i’ve never had everything to say and nothing to say at the same time. i want to thank you for everything; the memories, the inspiration, the support, but i also know that there are no words in the world that could even come close to conveying my gratitude. however, im going to try.

it was never a secret to me where i got my personality from. remembering every persons name when you walk into a room and wanting to talk to each and everyone of them, constantly arguing that one can never own too many pairs of shoes, celebrating every possible holiday in the most over the top fashion, breaking into random song and dance, finding every illegitimate excuse to go shopping, i could go on and on.

with all of the sadness in my heart, there is also an immense amount of pride. I am proud to be your granddaughter, proud to carry on your legacy of kindness and resilience, but i am also so proud of you. A black woman in America, a trailblazer paving the way for future women in stem, raising a beautiful biracial family, battling breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and overcoming them both, talk about black girl magic.

playing my first game without your pregame and postgame texts hit hard, not getting your selfies in all of your charlotte gear ready to cheer on the “lady forty niners”. i didn’t grasp how committed you were to mine, keanan, and jaisa’s careers until i came to visit you and saw my entire college career in a folder on your piano. every picture, every press release, some of them I wasn’t even in. and i look underneath it and there’s another folder of me and two more for keanan and jaisa. you always remembered my teammates names and asked how they were doing even if you hadn’t met them. knowing how much you supported me and will continue to support me from above, brings me a little peace of mind.

i hope you found grandpa john and you can watch the rest of my career, the rest of my life, together. i am honored to help carry on your legacy, i know you will still be there every step of the way. grammy i love you to the moon and back.
