This little passionfruit themed jester/bard is a character I created last year for The Devoured Year, a comic challenge I had a lot of fun taking part in. Taught me a lot and let me meet wonderful, creative people.

BEST PRODUCTION. 🏆🍭🌕

This one feels HUGE. To have our peers recognise the production in this way means the absolute world. If you were at the Fringe Awards and heard the celebrations coming from our team, you would have heard just how much love went into this show.

Every single person in the GRETEL team put a bit of themselves into it.

@machadebec built our fairytale estate from wood, paint, fabric and sheer belief. The tiny details she put into that set still make me smile.
@clare_mcloughlin1 made the world move through light and somehow knew exactly when to catch every character I was throwing at them.
@nadia_mohamed_costume made me and Jowy look like superstars while telling a whole other story through the clothes.
@virginiaferri04 composed four original songs, engineered the sound and somehow made the whole thing work with a DJ and a poet. Bruv.
@___jwy___ said yes to a random text from someone she had met for five minutes and ended up becoming the heartbeat Beatkeeper of the show. And her theatre debut. 🥹
@fionacmurrayy held us. Honestly. The glue, the care, the check-ins, the things she quietly picked up that I didn’t even know needed doing.
And @harriett_og , who took all the madness inside my head and helped me turn it into a piece of theatre. She gave us permission to play, while holding the vision so beautifully.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, shared their skills, brought ideas, made things, fixed things, carried things and believed in this show.

Thank you to @dublinfringefest for believing in GRETEL when it was just a script, and for backing us through the Break New Ground Bursary. And @fishamble for giving this show Big Ambitions.

Thank you to everyone who reached out after seeing the show. Every message, conversation and bit of encouragement has meant more than you know. Because this story really matters.

A few stills from our story GRETEL🍭

Wow.

I think I’m only just getting around to processing what happened last week.
We made this genre clashing, playful, gritty little fairytale world, brought it to @dublinfringefest , and got to share an important story with a hella lot of people.

Mad.

This one is for ALL the people who saw themselves in GRETEL. Who saw their friends. Their families. Their communities.
There were a lot of us in that room over those five performances. And I think that matters. Because it means none of us are alone in these stories.

There is so much I want to say about this show, the people who made it, and what it felt like to finally put GRETEL in front of an audience. But I’m going to let myself take my time with it.

I really, really hope we get to keep sharing this story. It matters that GRETEL keeps finding the people who recognise something of themselves in it.

So, for now, here are the first production images. How frickin beautiful are they?! All the team are incredibly proud. That’s a magical feeling for sure.

FIRST LOOK at PLEASE BREAK MY HEART captured by the fabulous @carolcumminsphoto

The show was launched into the world last night to magical sold out preview!! It was camp, it was tender and charged with glorious madness!

Thursday and Friday night’s shows are now sold out but don’t worry there are tickets left for tonight’s performance at 9:15pm and Saturday at 3:45pm & 6:45pm so get them while you can!! Tickets in bio!

It is such a joy to finally have an audience in front of this wacky explosion of a show so thank you all for coming and for @smockalleytheatre @dublinfringefest

I’m so proud of our incredible team for getting it all together, here’s to the next five shows!!

What? She posts nothing for months and then two sappy posts in two days? You bet.

How exhausting, beautiful, overall crazy my first Edinburgh Fringe has been. Had to take it slow at times, but it feels like there was so much experience gained, beautiful shows seen, and incredible friends made.

Thanks to @planetofthegrapesshow @motorway__real and @fringeburlesquefest for taking me on board, I’m so happy to have been a part of your shows. Thank you @clare_mcloughlin1 and @daisyglong for giving me the opportunities to get there.

To the funny and warm puppeteers, to the raw talents in the lynchian canteen, and finally to the open-hearted and sparkling burlesque performers, all my love.

And finally, a sunrise climb to the top.

A sappy little post on this past year spent in Dublin, before I head back tomorrow to start a second one.

A year and a half ago, I had the intense need to open a new door in my life, to let in fresh air and step out into a new phase. Everyday I am in Ireland I miss the dear friends I left in France, and yet everyday I realise how happy I am to be there, to have done this. So here’s to a year of making wonderful, incredible, talented friends, a year of theatregoing, of theatremaking, of pints and pub quizzes and hikes and fairy doors and foxes and essays and growing, most of all.

And to the next one, which starts with exciting projects and the perspective of more of all that magic.

🍬 Meet the Team 🍬

Mado is a stage designer, visual artist, author, illustrator and performer from France. She is a graduate from the European School of Arts in Angoulême. She first studied Stage Design at the University of Québec in Montreal, and is now pursuing a Stage Design MFA at the Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art in Dublin.

Over the past few years, she has worked as a designer on productions such as: Olympique by Lambert Riquier & Paradoxos company (set and costumes), Les Enfants-Pierre by Alice Kudlak & Quelque Refuge company (props making, masks and puppets), and Etnea by Amelie Gratias & Chambre 2046 company (costumes)

Mado loves myths and fairytales, and especially how they are given new life and meaning when we choose to tell them again today, so of course she was immediately drawn to the world of Gretel. She is excited to be working on this magical project, following crumbs and words through woods and concrete! 🍭🍭 by @machadebec
