So much for my promising career in espionage.
Welcome to a combination of random photos and book reviews (occasionally) in haiku. That’s it.

Was out in the hospital for a bit, but am back and decorating my place for Halloween. Today, I made a discovery: MY OUIJA CAFÉ AU LAIT BOWL IS DISHWASHER SAFE. Why on God’s green earth was I washing it by hand until now?!

7:00 am for a change. This past week’s events and I will be having WORDS with various medical professionals, for now I am scribbling down some goals, burning a candle for ambiance, and if all goes well, I may even be able to finish this book and return it to the library. Holy shitballs, there is some twisting and turning and dread magic in @jenjulianwriter ‘s work, and I need to kneel at the feet of the master and LEARN. by @macharehere

Is it odd that fictional horror makes more sense than the world right now? Not sure, but I am definitely enjoying “Red Rabbit Ghost”. I absolutely loved Jen Julian’s “The Winter Folk”, so I tracked this down at my library and am falling deep deep deep into this Southern Gothic.

A journey into hell sounds promising for 2:45 in the morning. Dang, Alex. Hadn’t realized how much I missed you and Dawes.

It’s a haunted house story, they said. It’s scary, they said. Admittedly, it is. This sucker sneaks up on you though. One minute you’re lured in to translating a little Morse code. Then, all of a sudden, you’re pouring through found documents between chapters, scribbling notes in your book, and just generally looking like a crazy person at your reading club as you mutter Latin to yourself.
I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS. I mean, I’m having a good time, but the point stands.

Nightmare Before Christmas, tarot, a fall scented candle, and a funky coffee mug. BEHOLD. Mornings at Casa Mac. by @macharehere

I read the first “Never Whistle At Night” anthology and really enjoyed it. I’m roughly a quarter of the way through “Part II: BACK FOR BLOOD” right now, and honestly? Loving this collection of Indigenous horror. There’s such a wide spectrum of style and content here (including some awesome CanCon!), and the vibes and content are impeccable (read: absolutely haunting). Kudos to Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alsr Jr. for bringing all these pieces together, and well done to all the authors represented in here!

This has been sitting on top of (one of) my TBR(s) for a while. It felt like the right season to grab it and dig in, and holy GOD was I right. Gotta bow to the master of suburban horror here, because Shirley Jackson is definitely it.

I’m only a handful of chapters in to this horror debut by @hwhittenwrites but let me tell you: I’m already shivering and have my suspicions about things, and we haven’t even gotten to the water yet. This portrait of grief, along with the carefully mounting suspense and creeping dread in the (not-so-much) background? I am loving this, never mind just for #spookyseason and it’s a reason why if she writes something, I’m buying it.

SPOOKY SEASON IS UPON US by @macharehere

It’s just about 5:45 am where I am. I woke up about an hour ago, and am armed with coffee and assurance that this picks up. LET’S GO GIRLS.

@wordsbyde has written something I would have adored as a cranky goth/punk wannabe teenager (Theatre! Vampirism! Death!), but is very much written for me as an adult (Swearing! Mental health issues! Shakespeare!). It’s leaving me kind of breathless with how quick it’s moving…but then I remember the theatre folk I knew and know and I just sigh a bit because yeah, that tracks.
