Flowering, 2025
(stacked ver.)

Though the main assignment of this project was to create a container using wood, this piece explores beyond the concept of containment and questions what it means for an object to exist solely for its function.

While initially inspired by the ikebana, my interest shifted toward Chinese philosophical ideas of transformation and multiplicity. (One could say I Chinesi-fied it ☺️😇)

I was interested in the emotional emptiness a vase carries in the absence of flowers— the moment when its purpose feels suspended. By rejecting the role of a passive vessel, the object resists its functional dependency and instead exists in a complete state of its own.

The stacked version is constructed by layering the wooden slabs atop the central base slab, arranged from largest to smallest. Concealed beneath the base are embedded spikes that discreetly support flower stems, helping them to stand upright.

In the bloomed version, the base slab is flipped to reveal five embedded magnets arranged along the outer edge. The wooden slabs are then positioned vertically and magnetically locked into place, allowing the structure to unfold outward. It’s reborn as it blooms into an independent form.
