American heartbreak(er)

Turns out the cover of my favorite album of all time, American Heartbreak by Zach Bryan,
was shot on a backroad of my small town

My buddy shot his first turkey on this land when he was 12

If you know me well, you know how deeply I’ve resonated with this album for years now. There is truly so such thing as coincidence.

My birth mother’s handwriting over my ribs, protecting my heart.
For months in early 2023, in the midst of a dark night of soul, I’d write out character traits of & dream of the version of myself that I would embody if I got this tattoo- a version of myself that had the courage to gain independence again after having the wind knocked out of me.

I would visualize that she would be carefree, authentic, wild, unapologetic, single, wouldn’t let anyone dim or slow her, never shrinking herself in the name of others, or the weight of the world, or a man.

I would listen to, and write out the lyrics of “Wild Child” by Kenny Chesney over & over. A song that captured my favorite things about myself, the traits that were the same reason why some folks didn’t know how to take me

I got this tattoo in the summer of 2023 as a dedication to those very traits- a couple months into a re-birth cycle.

It’s been a little over a year since I got this tattoo, and though devoting your life to taking the road less travelled and living as freely possible is sometimes challenging and lonely, I have kept my promise to myself- and I’ve spent (over) a year now staying true and close to my essence. I’m in awe of my growth, my devotion, and this tattoo.

And I’ve got some wonderful, eccentric, roots-filled memories under my belt now

Saw Zach Bryan play the very last show of his With Heaven on Top tour and I’m proud to say I knew every single word to every single song.
This album has been the soundtrack of my year, as his previous albums have been the soundtracks of my teenage years.

I made my friends meet round a fire to listen to this album when it came out back in January, so getting to hear it from the pit with one of those girls was something special.
