I’m super stoked to have an image “Specially Commended” in the @royentsoc competition. Thank you to the judges, as to be mentioned alongside such talented photographers is incredible, and congratulations to all those who placed! My first decent damselfly shot of the year. The few attempts before this, the wind and mild weather made it tricky to get a decent shot, as the damselflies were already super active even at 4 am. This is a Spring Bee-grabber, likely to be a Variegated (Myopa buccata).The females use their impressive-looking ‘beard’ to entice bees (and wasps). Then they grab them, pin them down and lay an egg inside the victim. ‘I made you a stripey sweater’ The Wasp Spider, I legit thought these were poisonous the first time I saw one as a kid, its bright colours and warning stripes.
