If you make and keep my life horrible then, when I can tell the truth, it will be a horrible truth; it will not sound good or look good or, God willing, feel good to you, either. There is nothing good about the evils of a life forced into useless and impotent drift and privation. There is very little that is attractive or soothing about being strangled to death, whether it is the literal death of the body or the actual death of the soul that lying, that the humiliation and the evil of self-denial, guarantees.
EXTREMITY DEMANDS, AND JUSTIFIES, EXTREME RESPONSE.
Violation invites, and teaches, violence. Less than that, less than a scream or a fist, less than the absolute cessation of normal events in the lock of abnormal duress is a lie and, worse than that, it is blasphemous ridicule of the self.

Art historian Guillaume Blanc-Marianne reads the work as a “magic circle”: a bounded arena of play, set apart from ordinary life, where three teenagers’ game of conquest - fought with knives over shifting ground - becomes a miniature of the adult world of power, violence and spectacle.

Il est des mélodies qui semblent verser des larmes – des musiques mornes, au fond, éprouvées par la généralisation de la cruauté. Il en est une qui commence par un long crescendo et s’exténue dans un decrescendo tout aussi long, comme si quelque chose s’avançait fatalement, en dégrippant peu à peu l’« énorme congestion du sentiment » qui l’accable. Engluée dans la matière même de l’air, elle succombera toutefois à la dissipation, sans qu’on ne sache comment la retenir. Cette mélodie-là parle de la liquidité des souvenirs et sonne comme une blessure ; elle procède de la pneumatique des mirages et dit la solitude sur la scène de la tragédie, le vacillement fébrile d’une lumière et la profondeur du velours, le plus petit séisme qui soit et l’effondrement d’un monde.

There are melodies that seem to weep — mournful musics, essentially, worn thin by the extension of cruelty. One such melody opens on a long crescendo and exhausts itself in an equally long decrescendo, as though something were advancing inexorably, slowly loosening the « enormous congestion of feeling » that weighs it down. Mired in the very substance of air, it will succumb at last to dissipation, with no one knowing how to hold it back. This melody speaks of the liquidity of memory and chimes like a wound; it moves by the pneumatic of mirages, and tells of solitude upon the stage of tragedy; the feverish flicker of a single light and the depth of velvet, the smallest possible tremor in the earth and the collapse of an entire world.

« Reality has become more violent, colder, and Nicolas Lebeau takes it upon himself to devise an antidote to the gangrene. Facing the acknowledgment that the visible and the image, a fortiori photography, are closely related to power and predation, he chooses practices of distortion of the visible and its monitoring […], the refuge of the sacred facing the outrageously profane language of surveillance and quantification; slow speed, loss, fragility against the dictates of productivity; existences drifting to escape the ruled ways of technocracy. As he reckons, it is there that are produced the “antibodies” and that appears the “immune process” against the violence of control. And he asks a question: do the monitoring devices protect us against danger, or do they invent and feed it? »

« Le réel s’est brutalisé, refroidi, et Nicolas Lebeau fait son affaire d’élaborer un antidote à la gangrène. Face au constat que le visible et l’image, a fortiori la photographie, sont intimement liés au pouvoir et à la prédation, il opte pour des pratiques d’altération du visible et de son contrôle […], le refuge du sacré face au langage outrageusement profane de la surveillance et de la quantification ; la lenteur, la déperdition, la fragilité contre les injonctions productivistes ; les vies à la dérive pour échapper aux voies réglées de la technocratie. C’est là, comme il l’estime, que sont peut-être produits les « anticorps » et que se manifeste un « processus immunitaire » contre la violence du contrôle. Et il pose une question : est-ce que les dispositifs de contrôle protègent du danger, ou est-ce qu’ils l’inventent et le nourrissent ? »

Les figures écartelées du Greco, les moines de Zurbarán qui « glisse[nt] silencieux sur les dalles des morts », les cauchemars de Goya se succèdent dans les couloirs du Prado. Goya, surtout, le Goya bien vieux et à l’œil pour toujours terrifié parce qu’il a vu bien des horreurs ; le Goya « maître dans l’utilisation des gris, des argents et des roses de la meilleure peinture anglaise [entraîné] à peindre avec ses genoux et avec ses poings dans d’horribles noirs de bitumes ». On l’a mis tout au fond du musée, dans une salle où les pinturas negras font taire tous les orgueils et rappellent à quel point une certaine Espagne se pense et se vit en noir. À quelques rues de là, on se salue et s’enivre dans un bar appelé Dolores – « douleurs », et plus loin encore, d’une autre pièce aux rideaux tirés et à la porte entrouverte, s’échappe le hurlement flamenco d’un cantaor qui brise le silence qu’on a fait pour lui.
C’est dans cette Espagne-là, « pays ouvert à la mort », où l’on acclame la faucheuse lorsqu’elle se penche à la fenêtre, où on la porte sur le dos quand elle fatigue, que Pol Taburet s’est essayé à la lithographie. Il l’a fait dans l’air imbu de légendes et de fantômes de Madrid, sous l’œil de l’esprit-maître Goya (car il faut l’appeler ainsi) et avec des intentions qui lui font hommage : chasse à l’homme en tête, qui n’est rien de moins qu’une « tradition biblique » et l’une des façons de gérer le monde, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit de la contenir.

« Il est en effet des choses qui fondent et qu’on ne peut rattraper, faute d’en avoir apprécié la matière. Il en est d’autres qui se laissent saisir dans leur nature fragmentaire, frappant là où une mémoire erratique s’impose à l’esprit comme une porte qui s’ouvrirait d’elle-même, sans que rien ne lui fut demandé. Une lumière faible paraît et indique une issue, un couloir tout au plus, en tout cas un espace où gisent des souvenirs voilés, glissants et où pointent parfois une figure troublante, au teint délavé par l’imminence de la mort qui la nargue.

À quoi ressemble un purgatoire ? Pas grand-monde ne le sait, sinon qu’il est question d’un entre-deux où tout se joue. »

And there are others that can be understood in their fragmentary nature, striking at the very moment when erratic memory takes over the mind, like a door swinging open on its own without having been commanded. dans le dernier @magmajournal, encore un texte sur Pol Taburet (@yves_ciroc), sur ses dessins et ses poèmes cette fois. Aucun d’eux n’est vraiment étranger à ce malin génie que les Andalous appellent duende et qui essaime et virevolte bien au-delà de l’Espagne, en tout cas partout où l’on tient pour acquis que la vie a bien plus affaire avec la mort qu’on ne se l’imagine ici et que le noir ne rend pas aveugle, bien au contraire

« […] le noir est tout un peuple : il y a le noir de vigne, de mars, de fumée, d’ivoire ou ébène, le noir de l’os calciné, celui qui ne se sépare jamais de l’or et de la lumière, mais les absorbe pour mieux se montrer ; il y a le noir du châtiment, le noir qui brille de la panthère, le noir-de-sang qui a coagulé dans la bouche, le noir de tous les incendies et celui de l’infigurable infini, le noir du jazz au fond du bar à minuit, le noir de la pire humeur et celui d’un regard hostile ou d’une âme, le noir de la rature, de la censure, et le noir le plus tenace, celui contre lequel rien ne sert de se battre : le noir de la mort après que les yeux se sont fermés. […] »
