It is undeniable that AI-enhanced coding tools change pur profession profoundly. But while prompting away on side projects that might never see the light of day, one thought kept creeping up to me. If we define productivity by the speed of written code, is more output really the solution to our problems? We don’t need more Software. We need better Software. by @madame_robot

Why I love creating with #p5js, since 2018 and counting:

🟢 All I need to start a new sketch is a vague idea of a graphic element, for example “a fan unfolding” for this one
🟢 I never have an end result in mind, which takes away all pressure to get to a specific visual
🟢 No matter how simple the visual is, there is always a concept I need to dig into and understand better than I already do
🟢 I learnt that, for myself, it’s best to work in several sittings. Start off with something, let it sit and think about more possibilities while away from the screen
🟢 I can’t describe why, but p5js somehow manages to embed poetry in movement, beauty in simplicity and calm away from the storm. Thank you p5js!

For my talk at @softer.insta last month, I took a pause to reflect on thoughts and themes which helped me grow both personally and professionally. You could also call it “Life lessons of a 37 years old”. 😜 I ended up with 5 principles which I would like to see as extensions of my idea of 🌈Kind Code🌈.

Meet our next speaker, the wonderful @madame_robot 💚🌱💓 We cannot wait to have her in the program!!

Valerie (she/her) is a Software Developer, occasional educator and non-awkwardness activist who thrives to make the world of tech more fun.

Next to working for file sharing service WeTransfer, she runs Cafe Robot, the first non-awkward Computer Club. By building metaphorical playgrounds for people to slide into coding, she taught over 400 students the basics of JavaScript.

Valerie consulted and lectured for the Front-end Developer program of creative business school Hyper Island and delivered remote coding workshops for e.g. the Royal Academy of Art The Hague.

🌈 Kind Code 🌈 My talk during the @awwwards conference last Friday had one key message:

✨ We can only learn through failing. Let’s embrace failspiration. ✨

It was an incredible experience standing on stage and speaking about my journey into tech, how burning out taught me a valuable life lesson and how we can make the industry more accessible by being kinder, nicer and warmer.

A big inspiration for getting up on stage and advocating for a "kinder" mind-set in the world of coding was my experience at @softer.insta earlier this year. For a long time I would be worried about showing weakness by behaving “too female”, often related to being “too kind” or “too soft”.

But the beautiful talks and people I met in Copenhagen helped me to change my perspective on that. Let's stop being worried about being perceived as less capable professionally, only because we demonstrate empathy. Quite the opposite, it's a strength!
