This is what home looks like when it’s made of trees, not walls.

I spent last 3 weeks trying to capture what I felt as I walked through it. This is the most personal piece I painted this year - a canopy of trees, a green tunnel, a quiet you can only find in your nook.

There’s a stretch of trees near where I used to go for my walk that forms this natural tunnel. The light barely gets through, and when it does, it dapples everything gold and green. Some days, we could also hear the cicadas.

I used to walk it constantly, alone, thinking, escaping, just being. This piece started as oil pastel and I’ve been going back in with acrylic to build up the depth and the way the light breaks through the leaves. Every layer I added took me closer to what that place actually felt like, not just what it looked like.

This painting started with a person…my DD.

Though my daughter is now on the east coast, every time we talk, I can hear it in her voice….how much she misses the mountains, the air, the seas, the light BC gives you that’s hard to describe unless you’ve stood in it yourself.

This piece began with a photograph by the wonderfully talented Pierre Leclerc (@pierre_leclerc_photography ). His work has a way of capturing BC’s scale and stillness that stopped me in my tracks. I used it as inspiration to paint my own version in oil pastel and acrylic, adding in some details from memory and imagination along the way to add to the mood.

It’s finally finished. A little piece of what her heart misses, made by hand, made with her in mind.

Some gifts you buy. Others you paint, layer by layer, thinking of someone the whole way through. 🎨🏔️

Toronto’s skyline just caught fire (in the best way). 🎆 This oil pastel piece took 7 layers to get that firework glow just right. Painted it with rich oil pastels and sharp acrylic touch-ups right here in The Six.

Would you rather watch fireworks from the CN Tower or from the water at Harbourfront?

On Canada Day (my first year in Toronto), I was standing on the waterfront waiting for the sky to erupt. Everyone around me had their phones up, but I just stood there watching the colors explode into each other over the skyline. I knew that I wanted more than the photos… I wanted a painting!

Though I wasn’t sure of the pastel blending, I stopped fighting the medium and let it do what oil pastel does best…glow messy and bright, just like that evening did.

Being on the edge.
Not to push the limits, but to soak in the beauty of the water meeting the cliffs.

This is Tobermory, through my eyes and soft oil pastels.

You can feel the thrill even while standing still.
That is why I wanted to create this piece.
To capture the view. To hold onto the feeling it left behind.

While creating it, I was thinking about the cliffs, the turquoise waters and the quiet that settles over.

If you’ve stood on these cliffs, I hope this brings you back for a moment.
If you haven’t, I hope you get to experience the wonder of Tobermory one day.

Flower Power is about the joy of making. Noticing. Letting go.

I learned that every flower has its own rhythm, much like every artist.

Some blooms asked for patience, others for play.

Together, they became more than a series. It’s about the expression of our world through theirs.

The flowers were the storytellers.

They became the beginning of a practice that I looked forward to.

Thank you for encouraging every experiment, every brushstroke, and every bloom.

This garden may be complete, but the journey is only just beginning.

See you in the next chapter.

Much love,
Maddy

A space and people that let us be.
Not isolation
Not a crowd
But the comfort of the select few.

The warmth of shared silence
The collective energy
The invisible safety-net
A genuine connection.

Our paths cross
We hold onto our uniqueness
The contrast not meaning a conflict,
We choose to stay together.

To be
Exactly
Where we belong -
In good company.

This has been painted to celebrate all those wonderful people.💕

Joys so simple
Joys so special

Joys so forgotten
Joys so remembered

Joys so small, they make us pause
Joys so big, they make us gasp

Joys so yours
Joys so mine
Together. Tender. True.

Here’s to our Tangled Joys🥂

This has been created in celebration of those whose laughter is permanently woven into our own.

This one is for all those who rise like a phoenix, stronger.

A fire touched,
The song went quiet.

But,
Rooted firm under the limestone
A hue refused its grey.

The space was reset
Wings of neon fuchsia spread out.

First,
A flutter,
A twist,
A dive.
Then, a shoot, a swoop and a soar.

Gentler but fiercer,
The Pink Phoenix arose.

Tropical afternoons
Haze of heat
Heavy silence
Dancing dust motes
Rustle of the green
Rhythmic caws of a lonely crow
Sharp shadows
Sluggish dreams
Everything sinks
Into the comfort of a Tropical Reverie.

Created especially for those who want a touch of tropical summer for their winter walls.
