There’s no shortage of aspiration in Scotland.
What’s missing is the confidence to go for it.

People have things they want to start. Things they want to build. Things to change. Things to Buy. Things to become. And things to do.

Most banks want to be at the centre of your financial life.
We thought Bank of Scotland should be in your corner.

Backing people who are trying to make something happen.

With 2 million customers and over 125k businesses, the challenge for the nation’s original bank was how to make it feel relevant to a new generation, not by looking younger but by behaving differently.

And that starts by doing something brave, something it had never done before.

Handing over control.

More than 100 real Scots became the stars of the bank’s first user-generated national brand campaign. Real people. Real businesses. Real ambitions. Real first steps and next steps.

The bank stopped being the hero and became the backer.

The giant in your corner.

Helping take care of the money, so you can just ‘Go do your thing’.

And I think that gets to something we believe at MadeBrave.

Brave brands worth believing in start by showing people what they believe in.
Or, better still, who they believe in.

Go do your thing.

For two years we’ve been working with the @officialfirstbus team to support their business transformation journey and bring their refreshed brand to life.

“Moving the everyday” is a new platform at the heart of it, brought to life by this poetic manifesto film starring @jordanfstephens , one half of Rizzle Kicks, who collaborated on the piece.

“My Bus” is an ode to the everyday moments that can only be found on the bus.

Our new @madebrave website is LIVE!

http://www.madebrave.com

I got stuck into building a lot of this one myself, alongside our amazing new head of marketing Hayley Urquhart.

The process took me right back to the start of my creative career. Playing with Macromedia Director, then Flash (remember them?).

Websites were wonderfully weird. Nobody followed a template because there wasn’t one.

People just played and expressed their brands with creativity, and sites felt like experiences, not boring brochures.

Then we optimised the joy out of it.

Now the way creative work gets made is changing again. It’s disrupting our industry (and every industry), but I see the positives that there are also new toys in our creative toolbox.

Most people think that means slop. And yes, there’ll be plenty. There always is when a barrier drops. When everyone got a camera phone, we got a billion blurry photos. When everyone got blogs, we got a lot of terrible blogs etc.

But I think a renaissance is coming too. The friction between an idea in your head and a thing in the world is disappearing, and that opens up exciting new opportunities for brands and creatives alike if you choose to see the World that way.

When you can generate a thousand things, you still need people who can tell which one has a pulse and which ones to mash together, and what’s worth putting out into the world and where.

That takes taste and bravery. I leaned on 15 years of running MadeBrave and 27 years of creative craft to build this new version of our site.

It’s a hint of where I see things heading. Alongside the site, we’ve tweaked our business model and the tech we use too, with more to share soon.

Go and have a wander around the inside of my head.

Ride a hoverboard and wreck our meeting rooms. Really.

Then tell me what you think 👇

The quickest way to kill a good idea? Ask everyone what they think of it.

Every idea starts as a Porsche. Low, fast, beautiful, a bit impractical. But that’s kind of the point of it right?

Then the opinions roll in. A bigger boot. Better mileage. Room for the kids. Each one sounds reasonable on its own, and together they sand the edges off until you’ve built something perfectly sensible that nobody will ever remember.

Nobody ever had a Volvo poster on their bedroom wall.

Good ideas still need challenge. They need people with taste and judgement, and people brave enough to say when something isn’t working and brave enough to stay true to their vision. What they don’t need is everyone getting a vote.

After 15 years and thousands of creative and branding jobs, that’s the bit we protect hardest at @madebrave

What’s the Porsche you’ve watched turn into a Volvo? 👇

Protect the Porsche.

Three public talks in the last six days. Rebuilding a business. And somehow nearly getting a book out into the world too. 😅

Businesses don’t build themselves, that’s for sure.

For the last couple of months, I’ve had my head down working some pretty crazy hours behind the scenes. I’m back in full start-up mode inside a working business.

Because the world around us is changing fast.

Technology and AI are completely rewriting markets. Old business models are being challenged almost overnight, and marketing and the creative industries are right in the middle of it.

It would be easy to bury your head in the sand and hope it all settles down and goes back to the good old days.

But this world doesn’t work like that and change is inevitable.

Sometimes you’ve got to dig in and rethink things and look at the world again with new eyes. Tear bits of your thinking down. Build new bits. Make some new mistakes. Change your mind. And keep going, even when it’s tough to do so.

One of the most dangerous phrases in any business is:

“That’s the way we’ve always done it.”

If you hear that in your culture, stop and have a look at whatever “that” is.

Does it still make sense?

Because what worked yesterday isn’t guaranteed to work tomorrow. And right now, tomorrow seems to be arriving pretty bloody quickly.

It feels a bit like rebuilding the plane while you’re already flying it.

Slightly terrifying. Messy. But also pretty exciting.

And I genuinely think there’s a massive opportunity on the other side of all this for the people brave enough to embrace it. I also think there is great opportunity for creative minds to bring their ideas into the world with less friction than ever before.

I’m excited to finally show you what I’ve been working on.

Next week, I’ll reveal it.

If you want to be one of the first to see it, head over to madebrave.com, drop your email in, and I’ll send it to you when it goes live.

This world belongs to the brave.

Is there anything harder than doing your own website?

We build brands for a living.

We help businesses figure out what they stand for, how they show up and how to make people care.

And yet I’ve been saying “we need a new @madebrave website” for years.

We’ve started it. Stopped it. Overthought it. Got busy. But client work always came first.

But next week, the new MadeBrave.com finally goes live.

It’s the first visible part of a much bigger reimagining of MadeBrave.

Not just how we look, but what it feels like to work with us.

We’re rethinking how ideas get brought into the world and brands get built. Creating more frictionless ways to work together. And making more of our best thinking accessible to more people.

We’re taking everything we’ve learned over nearly 15 years and 1000s of brand and creative projects and asking what MadeBrave could be for the next 15.

At the heart of it all is an idea we’ve believed in for years:

THIS WORLD BELONGS TO THE BRAVE.

So we asked ourselves:

What if we actually built the world?

We’ve been experimenting.

A lot.

And maybe it’s fitting that the first glimpse of what we’ve been building is a wee nod to the past, as we build MadeBrave for the future.

Next week, we open the doors. 👀

Comment ‘BRAVEboard’ below and I’ll send you a link and you’ll be one of the first ones to see it when it goes live 👇

I’m giving away 100 free signed copies of my book.

In case you missed it, I’ve written a book.

Last week I told you I’d taken my own medicine and turned six years of procrastinating into publishing a wee book, instead of a big one that never sees the light of day.

It’s called The Little Book of Brave.

And it’s 24 rules about creativity, business and bravery. A branding book in disguise, for leaders, founders, marketers, and anyone who’s worked out that safe is the riskiest thing you can be.

In it you’ll learn how to give your products or services meaning, and make them go viral for all the right reasons.

Conzo Throb has drawn all 24 illustrations. He got 24 hours to do it, to prove the point that an unfinished, imperfect idea out in the world beats a perfect one that never leaves the drawer.
So here’s how to get your hands on one.

Type BRAVE in the comments and I’ll send you the link to enter.

Pop your email in and you’re entered. I’ll pick the 100 at random when the book lands and send you a printed copy, completely free.

I’m also documenting the whole thing as it happens over on here @conzothrob making the illustrations, my design at @madebrave team picking the paper stock and laying it out etc, seeing the proofs, the print run, the launch and whatever goes wrong along the way.

Follow along if you want to watch it unfold.

Part 2: I’ve given @conzothrob 24 hours to draw 24 illustrations for my book.

One for every rule in the book.

They won’t be perfect. They can’t be, he only had 24 hours… But that’s the whole point.

You can’t do 24 illustrations properly in a day. So he’s drawing them with a Sharpie, keeping the first attempts, and whatever comes out is what goes in the book exactly as they are.

Because the thing I’m always banging on about is that out in the World beats perfect.

Here’s @conzothrob in my studio at @madebrave in @thesocialhub.glasgow on what the last 22 hours was like creating under pressure, and a couple of the first ones sneaked in there for good measure.

I’ll be sharing the rest over the next month as we work to get the book out into the real world and into your hands, so give me a follow if you want to see all 24.

In case you missed it, I’m publishing The Little Book of Brave. 24 rules about creativity, business and bravery, for leaders, founders and marketers. It’s a branding book in disguise, but shhh, don’t tell anyone. In it I’ll be teaching how to take the thing you sell, give it meaning and make it go viral for all the right reasons.

If you want to be first to get your hands on it, comment BRAVE below and I’ll put you on the list so you are first to know when it drops 👇#branding #creativity #businesstíps #madebrave #brave taken in MadeBrave by @madebrave
