✨Meet the Artist✨

Hi! I’m Alix and I am ready (or not?! 🫣) to finally pursue my love of art. I’ve discovered this year while talking to a friend that I proooooobably have ADHD when it comes to hobbies—I hop around a lot and then circle back. 😆 So we’ll see how this goes! 😜

This feels more vulnerable than anything I’ve done before (and I’ve made some pretty silly videos for my bookstagram account (@thisbookishmom) over the last 4 years. 🤣). I’m a bit of a perfectionist and a lot of the time, my art never feels good enough. Another reason why I move from one hobby to the next so quickly! BUT I have given myself a stern talking to and I am determined to let things go and have FUN and learn and see what I can do! 🙌🏻

Thanks for being here and encouraging me on my journey! You’ll never know how much that means to me. 🫶🏻

I didn’t know what to paint first in my handmade watercolor journal, so I let Pinterest decide for me! ✨

This was so much fun and I think it turned out pretty cute! Such a good way for me to practice too because I don’t like practicing. 😂

❓What should I paint next? Give me 3 words to search in Pinterest! 🙏🏻

I made a watercolor journal! 😍

I’ve seen some beautiful handmade journals from old books, but unfortunately they are not in the budget at this time. So, I decided to make my own! I didn’t mess with any sewing and just glued it together after watching many, many book binding tutorials. We’ll see how it holds up! 🤪

Now, what should I paint first?! 🤔

New obsession unlocked…adorable storefronts!! 😍

❓What is your favorite kind of art? (To make yourself or admire!)

I’ve been seeing some really cute shopfronts from different artists lately and when I saw the free shopfront guide from @inkypaperhouse, I HAD to try it with one of her reference photos. I fear I am obsessed. 😍 Definitely not perfect, but I learned a lot and I am already dreaming up more shopfront pieces. 🤭

This cute little house was an Airbnb that we stayed at recently and I took this photo because I thought it would be good practice for drawing and painting houses!

Sketching this piece was a lot of work and I started over a few times, but even though it isn’t perfect, I’m learning! 🙂‍↕️

Next up, paint! Follow along to see the progress!

❓Question for all of you architectural artists out there, I’m curious, what is your process for sketching?? Do you trace? Measure and use a ruler? Completely free hand it?? I’m struggling to get proportions and angles accurate! 🤪

I hated this painting, and tried to use water to make the background all one color and do something different. But of course, most of the painting was already too dry so it went a different direction than I had in mind and so I tried to save it instead. It looks better?? 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Just goes to show that not every painting is going to be great and that’s okay! It’s still practice and now I know what I need to work on—water and clouds. 🥴

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” - Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery 🍂

❓How is the weather where you are?

October is my favorite month of the year. Not only is it my birth month (🥳), but it is also the month where it finally starts to feel like fall here in Arizona! 👏🏻 I had so much fun painting this little pumpkin scene and now I feel like I need a bigger one too. 😜

Let’s yap a bit! I have no idea what I’m doing in this space yet…it’s a whole different world than the book community I’m used to. But THANKS for being here! 🫶🏻

This morning I didn’t have time to get out my painting supplies, so I decided to outline my scraps of paint swatches. It was very calming and I will definitely be turning back to this simple art practice when I need a few minutes of calm. 💆🏻‍♀️

There’s something about peeling away the tape at the end that is just so satisfying. Seeing those crisp edge lines and knowing another painting is done! ✨
