The ‘Daily’ | @madebyhaptic

This bag is entirely made by hand. Hand cut, hand dyed, hand sewn, hand set rivets and a handmade pattern. It has taken me awhile to figure out everything this bag needed, but with the addition of the removable shoulder strap, I think we have arrived.
This bag is available in 3 sizes, one larger (The ‘Weekender’) and one smaller (The ‘Mini’)

A few months ago we featured local artisans at work in our Chime Studio Maker Mondays series. Now we’re back to showcase some of the finished products! We got to take you behind the scenes as Jess of @madebyhaptic crafted a one-of-a-kind pair of sandals for Erin, and when they were ready the first thing we did was photograph them in the studio.

Jess’s beautiful attention to detail comes through in every way, and the black leather lent itself to some fun, dramatic lighting. Each of the sandals I make are cobbled by hand, favorite step of mine. I use solid brass clinching nails or ‘tacs’ to hold the top and bottom soles together. This practice of cobbling, was one I learned from my mentor, Barbara Shaum.

She hated planned obsolescence and designed her collection of sandals, that I still make today, so they could be pulled apart and resoled; So that her investment was your investment; So that you could wear one pair of sandals for most of your life.

As a follow-up to our Chime Studio Maker Mondays series, and because March is Women’s History Month, we thought we would focus this month’s newsletter on three female craftspeople who were gracious enough to invite us into their studios: @emilyruthprints, @ranimorrisdesigns, and @madebyhaptic. You can find the newsletter link in our bio, and read more in our latest blog post.

The common thread between these amazing artists is that we met each of them at a different local market, two of which were organized by other clients of ours. This is probably our favorite aspect of running a small business; working together means investing in each other’s wellbeing and success, and maybe even forming friendships along the way.

It’s so nice to share some more beautiful studio moments captured by @wecanchime last week. This is where the handmade sandals get cobbled together.

It is such an honor to be a steward of these tools and work benches from my late mentor, Barbara Shaum. It’s so nice to have her spirit in the room with me. If you don’t know who she was give her a little Google… she made runway sandals for most of the big names in fashion I know… many moons ago 🪄

For the final installment of this month’s Maker Mondays, we’re sharing our collaboration with friend and leatherworker @jssrobbins of @madebyhaptic. We first met Jess when we photographed @coucouracho’s Summer Market, where many examples of her beautifully crafted leather goods were on display. We bumped into her again at Cou Cou Rachou’s Holiday Market, and at a pop-up at @old_flame_cville, and we were always impressed with the custom sandals, bags, belts, and wallets Jess makes with exacting care. 🩴🪡

A little over a week ago we visited Jess’s studio in Richmond, where Erin was fitted for a pair of handmade sandals. It’s a true collaboration; Jess presents you with an array of designs to choose from, colors of leather, and together you decide on the style. We really enjoyed watching her in action and capturing the beautiful details that can be seen all around the studio. Here’s a sample of the photos we shot, and we hope this helps you appreciate the time and skill that go into each piece.
