Everyone knows Peter Moore as creator of adidas Equipment and the Nike Air Jordan 1 and Dunk, but did you know he also designed a boot for Columbia? Back in 1993 Peter and fellow Nike and adidas legend Rob Strasser were asked by Columbia to create a shoe that would combine the performance of an athletic sneaker and durability of a duck boot, and their answer was The Bugaboot. To celebrate Peter’s original 1993 design, in collaboration with Peter’s sons Hagen and Devin, on October 14th Columbia are releasing a very limited individually numbered 1,993 pairs. As many of you know I’m near obsessed with Steve Prefontaine so I just had to be at the 50th anniversary Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Saw two world records broken and had an absolute blast. Was amazing to be there with Pre’s friend and fellow Duck @stevebence and Pre’s former girlfriend Mary Marckx. Huge thanks to Steve and @nike for the invitation.

50 years ago today we lost Steve Prefontaine, the gutsiest, ballsiest, most diehard runner the world has ever seen. An athletic anarchist, he broke records, rules & hearts. He lived fast and died young, but in his brief 24 years he held every US middle distance record, won rights for his fellow athletes, encouraged women to start running and inspired a small running shoe company called Nike to take on the world. He still inspires me every day. Continue to Rest In Power Pre.

RIP Oliviero Toscani, the genius who changed the way brands play a part in society forever with his provocative and norm shattering campaigns for @Benetton. Decades before it was fashionable, Toscani and Benetton tackled issues like sexism, racism, poverty, war, homophobia and environmentalism, and as a child of the 80s and 90s I was hugely inspired by his work and it had a huge influence on my future career and thinking. I had the pleasure of spending a mind blowing two days with Oliviero at his house in Tuscany in 2023, talking about his life and career, an experience I’ll never forget. Thank you maestro, you will be very much missed, at a time the world needs your vision most.

To everyone who bought PETER MOORE-SNEAKER LEGEND, a huge thank you! But something we’d like to share is that the book is just the start of what will become an ongoing effort to preserve Peter’s legacy.

But what is that legacy? While most of us know him for his incredible sneakers, posters and creative work, Peter’s real legacy is people. Those he mentored, people like Jacques Chassaing, Tinker Hatfield, Howard White, Paul Gaudio, Eric Liedtke and Shane Ward and many more, are some of the sneaker industry’s most celebrated creators and leaders, and each of them is incredibly proud of the role Peter played in shaping their careers.

We’re determined that although he may be gone, Peter should continue to inspire people. To that end, Peter’s family and friends have created a new website petermoorecreated.com where you can learn all about his life and work. It’s still in its early stages, but please do check it out regularly and sign up for the newsletter so that you can stay posted on our latest work to keep Peter’s legacy alive.

You can’t really talk about Peter Moore without talking about this man: Rob Strasser. At Nike they called him Rolling Thunder because he was a force of nature. The yin to Peter’s yang, he was a giant both physically and in character, and its true to say that without him, there would be no Jordan at Nike, no Nike Air, no Tinker Hatfield, no adidas Originals and no Equipment. And without those, who would those brands even be? Today marks the 31st anniversary of his death in 1993 aged just 46, and yet his incredible spirit is still so much a part of the essence of both of the companies he helped to shape.

Last year on the anniversary I had the honour of joining some of his ex-colleagues in making the pilgrimage to his memorial in Manzanita, Oregon. I was also lucky enough to meet his wonderful daughter Avery who carries on the family tradition working at Nike. Emblazoned on the memorial stone is Rob’s inspiring mantra:

THE WAY AHEAD IS CLEAR
BE HONEST ABOUT THE BATTLEFIELD
THROW OUT THE OLD RULES THAT DON’T MAKE SENSE
GET OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE
GO TO THE FRONT OF THE FIGHT AND STAY THERE
AND MOST IMPORTANT, CUT OUT ALL THE BULLSHIT

On the 18th October 1984 the NBA banned Michael Jordan’s new black and red Nike shoes, and a legend was born. Here’s what Peter Moore, designer of the Air Jordan 1 had to say on it:

“The shoes weren’t ready when Michael went to New York for a pre-season game, so we had him in another Air shoe in the line that he picked out of the catalog, the Air Ship, but colored up in black and red. He was warming up at Madison Square Garden and fifty kids came running down from the bleachers and started yelling, “Michael, what are those?“ That’s the first time we knew how big this thing was. But NBA regulations were clear: all shoes worn by a team must be of uniform color. NBA Commissioner David Stern threatened to ban the shoes, warning the Bulls that if Jordan wore them in a regular season game, they’d be fined $5,000. But Stern didn’t realize it wasn’t the production model, so he wanted to ban a shoe that wasn’t the shoe.”
