New portrait! I'm @madelinetolle an interiors and lifestyle photographer based in Los Angeles. This is me, at my 1930's Tudor home filled with treasures and books collected from places all over the globe. I consider myself the luckiest girl and am so grateful that I get to work as a photographer capturing some of the most beautiful design in the world. If you had told teenage Madeline, that this is what she would grow up to be, she would not have believed it! When I'm not working you'll find me reading, gardening, or knitting up an absolute storm (the yarn is all carefully tucked away in this photo...which is a rare sight!) In updating all of my profile pictures across all of the platforms, I realized that this month marks TEN years that I've been freelancing as a photographer. In honor of this anniversary that honestly blows my mind, I wrote a Substack article that includes some of the lessons I've learned over the last decade of freelancing. I hope you'll check it out. So incredibly honored to be featured on this list among some truly talented peers. I absolutely love what I do and cannot believe I get to call this my *job.* Thank you to all my amazing clients who have trusted me with their gorgeous projects and allow me to create so many beautiful images. And thank you especially to the @archdigest @archdigestpro team… @michaelsshome @melissahmaria and @lizziesoufleris for including me. When it came to photographing the newest location of @teazzi.socal I wanted the photos to convey @mariamgracedesign design intent of a calm welcoming space, inspired by nature, where customers could experience the ritual of tea. I captured multiple angles that showcase the different viewpoints a customer might experience through a variety of wide, vignette, and detail shots, allowing the view to feel as though they were experiencing the space in real life. It took delicate balancing of warmth and tone to ensure that the mix of materials felt rich and cozy, while staying true to how they feel in person. While the compositions feel structured and architectural, I think the soft lighting throughout conveys a sense of balance which goes back to the harmony of tea. When I was putting together a mood board for our shoot @acoma.alcove I was digging through the @archdigest archives (my favorite source for photo inspiration) I found a few old photos of interiors taken at night that felt really interesting and fresh. I wanted to give it a go on this project and see how shooting at night would add a sense of life to the photos. I was also curious how a photo shot at night might sit within the rest of the images from the project. I ended up really liking how this one turned out with the warm golden glow against the desert landscape and dark blue sky. This is definitely an idea I'm looking forward to playing with more in the future. Design and build @hi.canyon Architecture @hundredmilehomes Photography @madelinetolle by @madelinetolle
The brass range hood is such a scene stealer on it's own, but then you add the rich black stone, hand built custom bar stools, and the most gorgeous light rays....and this kitchen is truly a show stopper ✨ Design @dorothymacik Florals @esseeemflorals Photography @madelinetolle by @madelinetolle
Behind the scenes photographing the interior design and architectural renovation of a coastal Summerland home, just south of Santa Barbara. The home’s owner is an avid cook, so the star of the project is the incredibly functional kitchen complete with rolling produce shelves. There’s also a full chef’s garden that is absolutely exquisite. Design @tap.studio Photography @madelinetolle Reel filmed and edited by @sk8rat by @madelinetolle
Even when I'm not "working," I'm taking pictures. I find that the pictures I take for myself, the ones just for "the love of the game," are the ones that push me further creatively. On my own time, I love photographing landscapes. Whenever I get the chance, I'm always thinking about two big things: 1: How do I make this composition so it's not just a horizontal band of sky above a horizontal band of land? How does this become dynamic? What brings it to life? 2. How do I capture what this place feels like in a way that is both honest and beautiful? Those may not seem like big things, but they're harder to answer than it seems. In the answering of these two things and truly looking, I'm able to push myself further creatively and think more deeply about photography, which ultimately becomes part of the way I see and what I then bring to my interior design shoots. Here's a selection of landscape photos I made in Tasmania, one of my all time favorite places in the world. One of the greatest gifts I ever gave myself was taking the time to go explore this very far away place very slowly and take all the pictures. by @madelinetolle

Had the pleasure of photographing @charliebhourston at her cute little Silver Lake home for @tulipshades a little bit ago. I adore shoots like these because they allow me to stretch different parts of my photography brain and play around in a different way. What if not every picture has to be perfectly straight? What if I tone the images so they look like film? How can I make the pictures about the light shades, but also about Charlie and how she lives in her home? How can I make a cohesive set of images even though each room has such completely different lighting situations? Thanks for having me! :) by @madelinetolle
Bring on golden light season! Late fall/ early winter is my time of year to photograph interiors. It’s perfect and fleeting! Dont miss out and have to wait until next year. Filmed and edited by @sk8rat by @madelinetolle
Let's talk about play! There's nothing more playful and fun to photograph than an eclectic mix of color and pattern. On paper, the bold stone, pink shower tile, green vanity, flower shaped sconces, and whimsical wallpaper would all sound like too much to go together, but in real life...it all works, and it's perfect. Very excited to share this video we made for @acoma.alcove , a totally unique site specific home built into the boulder strewn landscape of Yucca Valley. Using a variety of video techniques, including timelapses, drone , and 16mm film, we set out to show what the home feels like as the light changes from sunrise to sunset. I hope you’ll stay tuned all the way until the end for a special surprise ender ;) Landscape Design and Build @hi.canyon Architecture by @hundredmilehomes Styling @brittblain_bales Filmed and edited by @sk8rat Directed by @madelinetolle by @madelinetolle
