Today is my dad’s birthday. He would have been 45 years old. I don’t speak of him much, never have posted for his birthday but there’s no sense in pretending his absence doesn’t affect me. My father was an addict and, unfortunately, this is what ultimately led to his passing. He passed when I was 5 months old, and quite frankly didn’t want anything to do with me. I have never been in the same room as my father and have only been able to experience his life through pictures and stories. While I have had my frustrations with him, and frustrations with God for his plan for me to grow up without a father, I am still trying, and failing at times, everyday to be empathetic. Addiction is an insanely intricate and complex disease that cannot be understood by everyone. When I tell people my father passed of an overdose, I hope they don’t judge. Instead, I hope they remember that he too was a son, a brother, a grandson, a friend, and my father. He has a first day of school picture like most of us do, he fell off his bike too and scratched up his knee, he cried for his mother after a nightmare in the middle of the night, he laughed with his friends, because he wasn’t just an addict with mental health issues. He was doing his best with what God had given him. I truly believe this. If you takeaway anything from this post, let it be this. Please don’t take your family for granted. Hold them so close. Learn to understand addiction and the horrible toll it takes on our society. I’ll never see it as a coincidence that he was born on Saint Patrick’s Day. My mother tells me my quick wit, kindness, and ability to befriend anyone comes straight from my father. How LUCKY am I to be able to have received the best parts of him. I will forever be grateful. by @madelynfleming
