SEE, FEEL, IMAGINE: FOREST 2025
Acrylic on Presentation Board, 3 36” x 48”
These series of works are inspired by my recent visit to my older aunt’s home who lives in Frederick, Maryland. The last time I visited was prior to quarantine in 2021. It is now 2025. From what I remember, it was always a dread to visit my extended family in an older colonial house that lacked any connection to the digital world. I hate it there.
It always lacked any familiarity to me. A strange isolated home that sat on a high hill and sits between the wilderness. The nearest neighbor is almost a mile away. It became apparent to me the differences in our lives as I live in a suburban area. The seclusion of being enwrapped by the birds and trees and rivers didn’t feel isolating despite being limited in human touch. I found the forest was meant to be taken in as it was. An ecosphere meant only to be.
I wanted to create something that encapsulates the viewer. You walk up to it and it absorbs your senses into the work. Testing your abilities to absorb yourself into a forest despite being in a city like Baltimore.
SEE: To see the space is to intake it as it is. To experience on a superficial level. Objectified. Nothing beyond what your eyes see. Detached from the human experience.
FEEL: Closing your eyes and feeling the space. The wind, the grass rustling, the bugs whizzing past, water running through rocks. An emotional sensation yet, lacking physicality.
IMAGINE: Taking from what you know and developing it into what you believe. Not necessarily factual, but it’s reality to you.
Then repeat it. Compare your imagination to reality. Is your memory actual or was there something you’ve forgotten about that you can experience again?
After coming back to my aunt’s home in the forest, I’ve realized that I spent too much time within human spaces. I was uncomfortable because I couldn’t adjust to the forest or the people. Like a domesticated animal going back to the wilderness. I wouldn’t be able to survive, but I can watch from afar. by @madewithcindy
