POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In a couple of days it will be a month since Papa passed away. Last night I dreamed about him and then had to remember all over that he isn’t here anymore.

A couple of weeks ago I was reading an article Tainui had written about him and then crashed a car. It’s been a time.

I’ve hated watching my grandparents age.

They were my first audience. From as early as I can remember Papa was always encouraging me to sing and perform. He encouraged Felix and I to play. He built us a treehouse and Dad painted the keep out sign. He painted me a black tricycle which ended up becoming a flower garden. He always let me have the loose change from the box on his dresser until one day when it tallied around $200 and weirdly was much sparser forever more. He loved playing tricks on us and loved watching the rest of the whānau pick up the same relish for a tease, even if it sometimes went a bit poorly. One time after Felix chased me around with garden shears Papa was there to rescue me and bellow at Felix but I think he was also secretly quite amused. He was clever with his hands and up until arthritis slowed him down he was always whittling away at something. He was creative in a way that made anything possible, anything fixable, anything something we could work our way out of or into. Between him and Didie they raised a family of tenacious creative people and especially fierce wāhine that I am so proud to be part of.

Really lucked out getting to live with my best friends, buy a house together, get married, and have a baby.

Which if we believe the producers we’ve talked to, there’s not many people with stories like ours. The irony being that as our My House My Castle ep went to air we were working out how to break it all up. How to consciously uncouple with all the love in the world.

The house feels ginormous without you.

Māoriland is proud to release our Matariki range online for 2026 —

Manu aute were flown as part of the Matariki festivities, and today that tradition is also being revitalised.
It may have been a way for those here on Papatuānuku to reach up into the domain of Ranginui to send messages to those who had passed. “Kua whakarangatia koe – Return, take your place amongst the stars along with your ancestors that adorn the sky”

Our Manu Aute collection, designed for Matariki 2026, is a collaboration between carver Fayne Robinson, his son Tahu and our directors Libby Hakaraia and Madeleine Hakaraia de Young.

We honour all those who have passed and continue to inspire us.

Matariki is a time for celebrating with feasts of kai. And so we included the well-known whakatauki; Ngā kai a Matariki nāna i ao ake ki runga. At all feasts, there are stories retold and stories created.

Māoriland celebrates the storytellers.

Available online at Toi Matarau and in store at the Māoriland Hub - deets in the usual place

All I really want to do is make stuff and be around cool people.

Pulling this one off in the most anti arts, anti creativity, anti people, anti community environment was hard as f.

But we did it. I count myself lucky to work with the best team and to bring together such incredible storytellers from around the world.

Now to work out how to pull off our dreams for next year 🙌🏾 taken in Māoriland by @madicattt
