ATHLETIC POWER: Load & Explode

Power is the ability to produce force quickly — and in most sports, that speed of force application is what separates good athletes from great ones. To improve power output, we need to train with intent and precision. Here’s how:

🏋🏻‍♀️ High-speed resistance training
Moving heavy loads with speed enhances rate of force development (RFD) — key for sprinting, cutting, and jumping.

⚡️ Ballistic resistance exercises
Movements like trap bar jumps and weighted squat jumps are especially effective for improving vertical and horizontal force production (think vertical jump & broad jump outcomes). These exercises allow athletes to project force through the entire range of motion.

🧨 Plyometric training
Well-supported in the literature, plyos improve neuromuscular coordination, reactive strength, and tendon stiffness — all without needing equipment, making them ideal for fieldwork or travel.

As always, individual differences matter. Training should be tailored to the athlete’s physiology and sport demands. taken in Victoria, British Columbia by @madigeorgopoulos

Doing an upper body session when I should be running? Sounds about right.

As much as upper body isn’t a priority in race prep, I can’t shake the principle that keeping a strong balance throughout the body is more important.

Depending on the phase of training I’m in or how far out from the race I am, I’ll either do one entire upper body day that hits power, strength, and stability, or I’ll pop in the priority movements to my lower body sessions throughout the week.

This session is one of my favourites for hitting not only my favourite movements but also keeping a strong, balanced, and capable upper body 💪🏻

Always in my @outwaysocks cuz my feet have never been happier whether I’m lifting, running, or line dancing in my cowboy boots (trust me 🤠)

It’s about time I bring it back to the feed 💪🏻

Taking a couple months off training hard after the ultra was necessary. Finding the right balance for different seasons of life is what keeps me wanting to push forward long term.

Starting the rebuild with no BS in my programming. Simple, effective, and intentional.

Full body sessions focusing on lower body strength with a bit of upper in the mix for maintenance. Then, I’ll move into a split and bring in some power work once I’ve built a solid base of strength.

As much as I’m dying to get back into jumps, bounds, footwork, and more interesting run-specific training, I’d rather do this right and boring than miss fundamental steps in my training.

—————————

Aaand, as boring as this phase will be, at least my socks are fun 🙂‍↕️
Runners swear by using the right gear, but I never realized how much of a difference the right socks can make.

Do your feet a favour and treat them well with @outwaysocks

Girlies — please stop skipping upper body day. It’s not a good look.

It’s not just about looking toned or being able to do push-ups. Building upper body strength means better posture, more power, improved mobility, and protection against injury in and out of the gym.

As we age (especially heading into menopause), we naturally lose muscle and bone density. That decline starts earlier than most people think (even in our 30s 🥲). But strength training can slow it way down.

The earlier you start, the better. But it’s never too late to build a stronger, more capable body.

Train smart. Train strong. Your future self will thank you. 💪 taken in Victoria, British Columbia by @madigeorgopoulos

Training to failure (meaning you are unable to complete the final rep with good form and technique) is a huge part of building strength, gaining muscle, an overall improvement in the gym, but that doesn’t mean everybody should be doing it.

If you’re brand new to exercising in general, but weightlifting in particular, you are automatically at a much higher risk of injury than someone who’s been doing it for even a month longer than you. Odds are, you don’t have the foundation of strength and bodily control necessary to strength train safely on your own.

That’s where a good coach comes in to first help you build the foundation you lack and target weak links, then to progressively overload and train to failure to build up to your goals.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how we can contribute to making the gym a less intimidating space for newcomers, whether that’s to working out as a whole or to the gym itself.

This video is a perfect example of that.

Having been in gym since I was 13, I’ve learned to grow through the nervousness of starting somewhere new and it’s evolved into excitement for trying a new space and joining a new community, for which I am so grateful.

Even just being given a coffee by the other trainers gave me a little sense of connection to their community, and it made me think of how impactful small acts of kindness can be.

Smiling at people as you walk by them in the gym, asking for help and being genuine in your gratitude for it, saying a quick hi to someone you see all the time but don’t know yet all open the door for connection.

The more open you are to making new and genuine connections, the more open others will be with you and that can go a long way especially for someone experiencing that fear of being somewhere new. by @madigeorgopoulos

Trust me, I know this is so much easier said than done and it goes much deeper than this.

This doesn’t mean that you should never strive to be better, to be kinder, to be healthier, to be happier. It means that you shouldn’t have to change the fundamentals of who you are to satisfy anyone else.

Keep showing up with all your quirks and all your flaws. Keep reaching for more. Keep working as hard as you can to be the best that you can.

You don’t have to do it alone. Send me a message to see how I can help you gain more confidence in your body, in your skills, and in yourself 🫶💪 by @madigeorgopoulos

Ran 62km and over 2500m of elevation for a tiny cowboy hat and a week-long hatred for stairs. 100% would do it again.
