Part I: People

A little over a year ago I cooked up a wild idea to celebrate my 40th: a two-week stay in a tiny Provençal village inspired by Julia Child’s life.

In “My Life In France” Julia shares how no one and nothing is more important than the people around you.

She says: “In other words, friendship is the most important thing – not career or housework, or one’s fatigue” – and that friendship “needs to be tended and nurtured.”

I didn’t quite know what would happen bringing folks together from different parts of my life, but what bloomed from this adventure was beyond anything I could’ve dreamed up.

We ate and drank freely and with a deep appreciation of where it came from, we laughed heartily and cried healing tears into the early morning hours, and we explored a new part of the world, hand-in-hand, as a chosen family.

The person I am today – a queer, nonbinary, slowly healing human – is very much thanks to the gifts these folks, and so many others, have given me. Cheers to each of you. À votre santé. taken in Village de Venasque by @madingbaum

Our community unexpectedly lost a cherished friend and mentor — Louis Jenny — more than a week ago, and I’ve been admittedly struggling to find the words to acknowledge his passing and honor his legacy. But in reconnecting with so many dear friends of Louis, I’m reminded a few lessons I’ll be carrying with me:

1) Life is made all the sweeter with laughter. Laugh whenever you can. And if no one else is laughing, laugh at your own jokes. It’s contagious.

2) Not everyone you meet is meant for you. Be kind, but be intentional about the community you keep. If you’re lucky enough, they’ll become family.

3) Sometimes being the quiet, steady center of the room is the most important role you can play. Not the loudest. Not the flashiest. Be the rock that grounds the people you love.

This year’s holiday project with the kiddos was particularly special for me, having just explored gorgeous Oaxaca for @gmartindiego’s birthday.

These Nahual kits from @jacoboymariaangeles introduced my littles to the beautiful folklore that inspired the Alebrijes of the Disney/Pixar film Coco.

I may or may not have already booked my return to #Oaxaca in the new year 😅❤️ taken in Wisconsin by @madingbaum

When I think of all the places that my favorite Sagittarius has taken me…

From DC to NYC to SF. The Scottish Highlands to the Greek Islands. Spain. France. Thailand. And of course, all across Mexico: From the magic of Valle de Guadalupe and Ensenada to the winding streets of San Miguel de Allende, to our beloved Puerto Vallarta. And just the past few weeks – a foodie adventure through Oaxaca and an epic celebration in Merida.

Thank you my dear @gmartindiego for pushing this Cancer out of their shell and into this big, beautiful world.
