500 Million Stars would not be enough of a rating to convey what a phenomenal story this is. Shen Tao has crafted a masterpiece of a historical fantasy that deserves to go down in history itself. While reading this my heart has been shattered, stepped on, buried and reborn with new wings.

I’m not sure I have the words to convey just how much I adored Wei. From the moment she begs the eunuch to take her to the palace, to become a joke if she must, all in order to save her family, I felt endeared to her. She’s brave, she’s complex, she’s determined. The stakes were so high and yet she never gave up hope that things could change. Even when it seemed that all was lost, her heart stayed pure and true. And yet she still wasn’t perfect, she had doubts, she made power plays that left my jaw on the floor. I don’t think I have ever read a character like Wei and I don’t think I ever will again.

Despite all of his faults, I felt myself really falling for Terren in the end and hoping for his redemption arc. Even though it brought me to tears, both Terren and Maro got the ending they deserved. I found myself clinging to these last few chapters, not wanting the story to be over.

The magic system in this world is one of the best that I have come across in all my years of reading fantasy. If you were to ask me what magic I wish I could have, it would be literomancy. What world would I live in? One with cats made out of holly and horses with manes of summer. The world building is lush, it’s beautiful, it’s tragic, it’s quite simply UNFORGETTABLE. The writing itself? Masterful.

This is easily my top book of the year, one of the best I have ever had the privilege of reading. Thank you @storygoose for sharing this story. Thank you @ashley_a_reads for gifting me this special edition. ❤️ by @madisoninclover
