We discuss a very big bonefish, a very big tarpon, and a very big snake in this one.

Raised in South Africa, Scot was part of a generation of guides who pushed deep into the outer islands of the Seychelles, exploring some of the most remote and extraordinary fisheries on the planet. Since then, his travels have taken him from Africa to Mongolia, Norway and beyond. Along the way, he’s collected the kind of stories that come from spending a life in wild places.

From the flats to the rivers and coastlines of Africa, and one story a little bit do or die, but everybody lives, so we can share them today.

This week on CAMERAS OFF (Link in bio) Captain David Blinken lets us hitch a ride on his flat skiff on a foggy Fall Long Island morning, looking for Striped Bass. It’s a unique opportunity to experience shallow water fishing with someone who was among the first to explore the shallows of eastern Long Island. While he has gained an expert reputation in guiding for Saltwater fish, one fish may rise just above as a passion: the Striped Bass. What he found in Long Island waters decades ago, changed his life. He is committed to seeing the fishery return to that healthy state.

After tracking striped bass, bluefish and false albacore in the ocean and sight fishing the shallows he collaborated with conservation organizations like the American Saltwater Guide Association and lent his voice to the Striped Bass and the False Albacore populations and their need for management. His interest led him to co-found Masters of the Fly, as a forum for anglers, tiers and conservation voices. As an expert fly tyer, ski instructor, casting instructor, and conservationist, his skills are varied, but his love of the sport and sharing it with others is not.

From the Mayans to fly rods—This week on CAMERAS OFF/Tarpon Diaries (link in bio) we go back to the future. For more than 30 years, Carlos “Kechu” Marin Jr. has followed the water - around the globe and back to his home - in the footsteps of the Mayans, and the flats of Belize - and Ambergris Caye.

His father and grandfather first explored these waters and along with a few legends (see also Lefty and Chico) laid the foundation of knowledge for Kechu to become an expert guide at El Pescador. His four brothers became guides. Today, Kechu is one of Belize’s most respected fly-fishing guides, a longtime fixture at El Pescador Fly Fishing Lodge and a nominee for Orvis Saltwater Fly-Fishing Guide of the Year.

He knows where the fish are, and yes, where the grand slams live.

On this week’s conversation on CAMERAS OFF/Tarpon Diaries (Link in bio) Arno Matthee answers that question and more — From the Seychelles to giant tarpon in West Africa - we go off the grid. Arno Matthee, A pioneer in the Seychelles—who turned west and set out to open an entirely different frontier.

With the only flats skiffs (crazy?) on the African coastline, a few fly rods, facing pirates, poachers and little infrastructure to work with, he began exploring the coast of Central West Africa for giant Tarpon. With “…the only flats skiffs on the west coast of Africa” everything was from scratch. Few anglers have helped open up two such different corners of the fly-fishing world.

Arno is currently putting these adventures into his book, Giant Tarpon: The Exploration of Central West Africa.

It’s time to share the mysteries of the deep on CAMERAS OFF/Tarpon Diaries (link in bio). Dr. Aaron Adams, Director of Science and Conservation for Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, Senior Scientist at FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, has been recognized among the top 2% of scientists worldwide.

For more than 25 years, Aaron has studied the fish and places that flats anglers care about most — tarpon, bonefish and permit — from their movements and spawning migrations to habitat loss, water quality, population connectivity and the mounting pressures on these fisheries.
His goal is bigger than simply understanding the science: turn the science into conservation that works — identifying the habitats these fish need, understanding where they travel and spawn, connecting fisheries across international boundaries, and giving anglers, guides and resource managers the information needed to protect them.
As an angler and a scientist has a passionate interest in what the future may hold for the flats fisheries we love.
