until I was maybe 16 or 17 I could barely order my own food at a restaurant. I wouldn’t go in a gas station alone, ask people questions, make a phone call to someone I didn’t know… the list goes on. I don’t know why, but having to talk to a stranger or talk in front of someone I didn’t know would genuinely bring me this unbearable sense of fear. My family wondered if I would ever be able to do anything for myself.

after I finished high school, I decided I was going to do ANYTHING to travel. I had dreamt of it for a while, making Pinterest boards of destinations and watching YouTube travel vlogs… I wanted so badly to make it happen for myself.

I ended up looking for dance competition jobs and applied for the first one I saw without telling anyone I was doing it and got the job. So there I was… the girl who could barely talk to strangers or go into a store alone now working a job that required flying to a new state and working with new people every weekend. I learned how to be by myself, enjoy my own company, travel alone, and make friends with strangers of all ages, races, backgrounds in literal minutes. I’m so forever grateful for that.

But it’s so much more than a job that forces you to become someone you never thought you were. When you want something so bad, you can do WHATEVER it is you need to make it happen. I used to fear talking to strangers!! My mom had to order for me at restaurants until I was an upperclassman in high school!! But change happens when you want it most, and I wanted nothing more than to travel and see the world.

I just went on my first REAL solo trip and I’m feeling very proud of the work it took to get here. It might not feel like a lot for some people, but to leave home for 2 weeks, fly across the country and over ocean, stay in a hostel with strangers, be in a place you’ve never been, do it all alone and not feel absolutely terrified?? that’s something I once thought would never be possible for me.

I know this is so sappy and probably dumb but it’s growth, and social media is my little internet scrapbook… so here’s a cute video collage of my time in Hawaii and a novel about what it took to get here :) by @madisonzetaa
