Archival Objects, a study of the South’s material memory. A space by Madras Finds, where we revisit everyday relics that shaped how we lived, carried, stored, adorned, and moved through the world. The Tiffin Carrier, a stack of separate containers that brought an entire meal together in one portable form. • Commonly made from aluminium or stainless steel, with individual metal containers stacked vertically and secured beneath a top handle. • Each tier held a different part of the meal, keeping rice, curries, poriyal, and other accompaniments separate during the journey. • The containers fitted one above another, with clips, locking rims, or fastening mechanisms varying across designs to hold the stack together. • Available in different numbers of tiers, allowing the carrier to accommodate anything from a simple lunch to a meal with several dishes. • Carried to schools, offices, factories, and other workplaces, turning a home-cooked meal into something that could travel with you. • The stacked construction made efficient use of space, keeping several portions together without requiring a separate box for every dish. • Depending on the design, individual tiers could be detached and passed around or opened one at a time, revealing the meal in sections. Introducing the Hansa Pallanguzhi, a traditional South Indian game, here given the presence of a sculptural piece for the home. Carved in teak in the form of the Hansa, its fourteen cavities follow the familiar Pallanguzhi board, while the elongated form gives it a presence far beyond the game itself. Not every treasure we bring to Madras Finds is designed by us. Some come directly from the artisans we work with, designs we choose to leave intact, so their craft can travel a little further. A House of Patterns A closer look at the patterns, colours and details woven into the South. Some homes stay with you because of one particular detail. In Chettinad, it could be the colour of a floor. Athangudi tiles became an unmistakable part of the region’s homes, bringing together pattern, colour and architecture in a way that feels almost inseparable from the space around it. The patterns repeated, but never quite felt repetitive. Colours met in combinations that could be bold, unexpected and full of character, turning something as ordinary as a floor into one of the most memorable parts of a home. They were practical too. Their composition helped keep interiors cool, an especially thoughtful quality in the heat of the region. And then there was the making, each tile carefully created by hand, allowing a sense of variation to remain within all that order. Perhaps that is what makes the floors of these homes so special.
