On April 20th my life was forever altered, I lost my dear friend John. John touched the lives of so many and I feel so incredibly grateful to have been close with him. No words can truly capture who John was and what he meant to me and everyone around him… he was the very best.

John was a once in a lifetime friend, and our friendship was one I could never do justice with words. He was the friendly face in a crowded room greeting you with a kind smile. A presence that I will forever miss. John was quick with one liners that got a laugh out of everyone. He was someone who you could trust and lean on. He would cheer on everyone around him through milestones big and small. He was absolutely brilliant yet incredibly humble. His kindness was truly unlike any other.

I cherish all of the memories we made from silly competition in elementary school to going to freshman homecoming together, day trips to six flags, football games, doing anything but pay attention in AP lang and chem (he also somehow convinced our chem teacher to play tennis with him using tennis rackets and a ping pong ball in the middle of class???), and arguing about Ohio State and Indiana basketball. We were always talking about basketball, just last April we were talking about March madness. Maybe this will be UIUC’s year?

I talk about you to anyone who will listen and I miss you every day. I think of you even in the smallest moments. I find myself rereading texts and laughing at our photos, I wish I had more. The smartest and kindest guy I have ever known. The memories and laughs spent with you will always bring a smile to my face. I am so lucky to have 13 wonderful years worth of memories with John Polyak. John, you will always be one of my favorite people and best friends. I only wish I said it more while I had the chance. You are loved by so many and that will never not be true. I will keep missing you until we meet again up in heaven. I love you, always.❤️
