Four years ago, I met Walter through the football group I play with.

I’ve always been fascinated by people who had no real connection to Israel, no Jewish background, no childhood dream of moving here…and somehow ended up building a life here anyway.

How do they adapt to the mentality and culture?
Do the loud conversations and constant chaos shock them?
What do they think about Israelis?
How does this place slowly become “normal” to them?

As the son of immigrants myself, I always felt a little split between cultures. Even though I was born here, I grew up around a different mentality at home, so stories about immigration and identity always pulled me in. But I’m especially fascinated by people who never imagined Israel would become part of their story…

In Walter’s case, it all started with love.

He met Shani during a student exchange program in Germany, and as they fell more and more in love, they eventually moved to Israel together.

Walter arrived here during COVID knowing almost nothing about the country, and somehow, within just a few years, he experienced more than most people could imagine: pandemics, wars, October 7th, and one of the most emotionally complicated periods this country has gone through in recent history.

And through all of it… he stayed Walter.

Ever since I met him, he kept telling me how Genoa actually was for him.
In my head, it was Italy. Romantic streets, beautiful buildings, movie-like energy. But every story Walter told me about his childhood somehow destroyed that fantasy a little more each time.

Not because he hated Genoa.
Actually, I think he loves it in his own strange way.
But hearing Walter describe it felt less like La Dolce Vita and more like "you don't really have what to do there"

Then one day I had an idea:

Why not make a short film about Walter’s childhood, his personality, and the strange path that eventually brought him here?

But beneath the humor, this film is about how love brought people from all over the world right here to Israel. And honestly, that moves me. ❤️🍕
