On January 15 and 16, @galerie_dermixerfrankfurt will show a video screening. Among the works is this piece from 2018 titled “The Iceman / El vendedor de helados.”

It shows the quiet observation of an ice cream vendor in Lima, Peru, during a brief moment of interruption in his daily work routine. During this break, the uniformed, coded figure steps out of his role and appears as a fragile individual, raising questions about visibility, economic conditions, and structural reality. The title and figure of the ice cream vendor carry romanticized cultural associations that contrast with the economic realities embedded in his labor.

As part of the group exhibition Ambiguity @hinterconti_hellsclub the work understands itself as an aesthetic and philosophical approach to the topic. Instead of a clear classification, it opens up a space in between, where meanings overlap and can be reinterpreted. Ambiguity is not seen here as a deficiency, but as a quality—as an invitation to perceive complexity.

Central to this is a quote from an essay by her late uncle about his return to his Andean home village: “Like the veins of the human body, the bloody stream flows.” With this comparison between glacial ice streams and the human body, he refers not only to his personal connection to the landscape, but also to a way of thinking that understands humans, nature, and the world as a unity. by @mae0l

MARIYAM OBREGÓN LUTZIN (@mae0l) beschäftigt sich mit Zeichensystemen als Träger kultureller Narrative. In ihren Arbeiten untersucht sie, wie Erzählung durch Schrift, Zahl und Form vermittelt oder erinnert wird. Die Fotografie wird in der Ausstellung von einer kleinen Porzellanplatte ergänzt, in der Symbole für Freude, Wut und Trauer dargestellt sind. In der Gegenüberstellung von Fotografie und Keramik entsteht ein poetischer Resonanzraum zwischen Intimität und Abstraktion, zwischen dokumentierter Realität und emotionaler Codierung. Nähe artikuliert sich nicht über das Wort, sondern über den Körper: Haut, Pose und Haltung. Zwischen gestischer Gravur und digital geprägter Geste entsteht ein Dialog über Zugehörigkeit, Freundschaft, nonverbale Kommunikation und den subtilen Codes einer Generation.

This year I have learnt a lot about body movements. I experienced the power that small gestures can have.
I have learnt a lot about dance. About what dance is and what dance can be. About the rawness of letting go and this very present declaration of love for the moment. Whether in the club, at home or on stage.

Here I share with you images from the piece Football Echoes, which took place at @kampnagel_hamburg in the summer, as well as some text works that have been on my mind recently.
