My therapist and I have been uncovering all the ways in which I still see the world in black and white. She’s helping me recognize that most decisions aren’t moral ones, they’re just different paths that give us information about ourselves. We might always wonder about the lives we didn’t choose. But I think that’s what makes us human.

Lots of writers have explored this idea. Some of my favorites are Sylvia Plath with the fig tree analogy in The Bell Jar, Cheryl Strayed’s “sister ships” in Tiny Beautiful Things, and Matt Haig in his novel The Midnight Library. Go read them all if you haven’t already ☺️🫶🏼 by @mae_musing

Even if our kids don’t ever experience an active shooting, the “what if” fills their bodies with fear and trauma.

I remember holding eight-month-old Faye, absolutely crushed, watching live footage of Sandy Hook, hoping for a better future for her and for all of our children. It’s heartbreaking, enraging, and absolutely unspeakable that nothing has changed since then.

If you need me, I’ll be playing with my kids’ hair, devastated that we live in a country that allows this to keep happening. by @mae_musing

It’s always interesting to me how some poems come flowing out without much effort, while others feel meticulously crafted. With this one, I actually sat down intending to write about something completely different, and this is what came out instead. It felt like a good reminder to make time to sit and write because you never know what your subconscious has been waiting to say. It’s been a minute since I’ve shared on here. Thanks for being here. 🫶 by @mae_musing

My beliefs about what happens after I die have morphed and shifted over the years, but the uncertainty has given me a deeper sense of how much this life, this moment, this breath matters. I hope that when death finds me, I’ve spent every last ounce of energy, that my hands and heart and body are worn from giving every bit of love I could. And I hope, when it’s time, it feels like placing the last puzzle piece. ♥️ by @mae_musing

There’s something endlessly endearing about the way humans press their lips together when they like each other. To join the softest parts of ourselves in affection, what a beautiful kind of intimacy. First kisses are many things, but never boring. 💋

I’d love to hear about yours in the comments. 🫶🏼 by @mae_musing

Hi! I’m reposting this poem because the song I originally paired with it a couple weeks ago got deleted, which ended up removing all of my audio too. Thanks for your support. 🫶🏼

Joining in on my friend, @dancingdebb’s fun poetry challenge, with “Spooky Season” as the prompt. Happy Halloween week! 🕷️👻🎃

It’s that time of year
when there’s a chill in the air,
and the cold runs its fingers
through my hair.

Goosebumps rise;
the trees howl and cry.
The grass and flowers
begin to die.

Leaves scurry as if
they’re running from something.
I glance over my shoulder
and see shadows lurking.

There are bats in my house,
and ghosts in the stores,
skeletons and witches on
my neighbors’ porch.

We light candles and fires
to warm ourselves near their spark,
because even the sun
won’t stay out after dark.

Carving out pumpkins and time
with those we love to the core,
as our heads hit the pillows,
laughter echoes…behind the door.

Here’s to the photo-takers,
the memory makers and seers,
who freeze time in a shutter
declaring “this moment matters”

To parents, partners, and friends,
forever caught behind the lens.
Collecting the proof that love exists,
documenting life in frames, and clicks.

With arms and faces in selfies
disproportionately bigger than
everyone else’s.
Who take the group’s eye-rolls
and grief with good graces.

They zoom out of the moment,
to zoom in and capture the beauty within it.
The rare togetherness we share,
the meals made with love and care.

Your cat mid-yawn, the sky at dawn,
the flowers in your yard, and in your hair.

Here’s to the photo-takers,
the magic collectors,
and noticers,
who make us all time travelers.
In every flash, a forever.

“Aging is just another word for living.” - Cindy Joseph ♥️

From the moment I took my first breath,
I was aging.

Wrinkly and glistening,
a whole month early,
my lungs worked tirelessly
to breathe evenly.

Living
was my only goal, really.

And with each second passing gently,
I’ve grown stronger, deeper,
physically and mentally
always shifting and bending
to mirror the seasons
unfolding inside of me.

As a mother,
I notice time rushing past me.
I try to hold it desperately
like a baby’s fist
tangled in my hair.

And still,
my children age continually
eleven and thirteen,
collecting years
like trees collect rings,
blooming into themselves
authentically.

Aging happens naturally,
like the way I love them
instinctively,
without question,
without pause.

And yet,
we’re sold a story
that aging is disgraceful,
or scary -

that each line on our bodies
lessens our worth
and beauty,
leading to invisibility.

So we buy whatever promises fully
to hide the signs
of having lived:
boldly,
messily,
wholeheartedly.

As if I could stop the sun
from kissing me,
or hush the drum in my chest
beating steadily.

As if I could still the wind in my lungs,
or slow the river in my veins
flowing freely.

I’m here
just momentarily

but hoping to stay
long enough
to see my skin once again
as it was
when I took my first breath,

wrinkly and glistening

and living,
still
the only goal,
really.
