“sister song” is out now !! this one is very close to my heart, because i wrote it for my best friend. the first memory i have is of being her big sister, and it is the most beautiful gift that this life has brought me. there’s nothing on earth like sisterhood, i love my sisters forever, and no one could ever know me like they do 💌 - cover photo by: @ceekrell film dev & scan by: @nicefilmclub produced & engineered by: @okayalrightbryce strings: @charlieschnurrmusic pedal steel: @nick.website percussion, bass, banjo, ebow: @okayalrightbryce acoustic guitar: me mastered by: @mrmaster3000 by @maekrell
“sister song” my ode to my best friend and little sister, is out in a few days, on thursday 10/22 💌🫶🏼 - ness and i’s relationship hasn’t always been the way it is today. first, there were years of distance, misunderstanding, misdirected anger, and resentments grown without a fair chance to shrink. a few years ago, while visiting family, all of that came to a head. we were fighting in the car, and my mom was fed up with it. she pulled over, told us to get out, and said we couldn’t get back in until we had hashed it out. we spent what felt like hours on that bench. years of deep seated hurt buried deeper than we knew all came to the surface, and we got back into that car forever changed. a year or so later, we both got that bench tattooed. and while i don’t need a tattoo to remind me of the night everything changed for the better, its nice to always have a reminder to carry with me. a reminder that in the face of difficulty and anger, we both chose something bigger, and more beautiful. there’s nothing on this earth like sisterhood. and thank god for second (third, and fourth) chances, i wouldn’t have the life i have today without them. by @maekrell
“better than this” is out now!! often by the time a song comes out, i’ve had time to process and come to terms with the words i’m singing, and often it makes them hurt a bit less. this song isn’t like that for me, and while it makes it feel much more real and raw to release, it also makes it very deeply special. I wrote the beginnings of better than this a long time ago, in january 2024 while staying in a little cabin in upstate NY with the dogs, the rest of it that may, and only finished it right before I drove out to California to make the record. it’s about a type of recurring dream I have that I find really hard to distinguish from reality, often waking up fearing for something I believe I had done (but it was just in my dream). Its about when liz started therapy, and the fear that I began to feel worrying she’d get better and no longer want to be with me, about worrying you’re as “good” as you’re ever going to be, and feeling like too much and not enough, all at the same time. - cover art photo taken by my love, @poetinpearls film dev & scan: @nicefilmclub produced & engineered by @okayalrightbryce strings @charlieschnurrmusic pedal steel @jodi_worldtour banjo, bass, ebow, acoustic guitar: @okayalrightbryce acoustic guitar: me :) mastered by @mrmaster3000 apollo looking at the snow at the cabin we stayed at in january 2024, when I wrote that would later become “better than this” my girls :) making the record at bryce’s, and banjo laying out between our instruments the path we took the cover photo on, in big sur by @maekrell
NYC !! i’m doing something very special in november, and i’d love for you to be there :) my new record, lullabies for the soul that stuck around will be out on 11/11, and on friday 11/13 i’ll be playing a super intimate living room show in midtown. we’ll all sit together, i’ll play the album for you front to back and talk through the stories behind the songs and the process of recording them in a way i’ve never done before. super cozy, and personal, and honestly just a big dream in the making and i’m so beyond excited about it. tickets are super limited as the space isn’t huge, and they’re available now!! hope to see you there 🫶🏼 by @maekrell
“better than this”, one of my personal favorite songs from the new record, will be out one week from today, september 25th 💌 - i wrote the first iteration of this song a long time ago, early last year i believe, but even now, i’m still grappling with the feelings behind it. “better than this” is about weird recurring dreams that are hardly distinguishable from real life, about worrying you’re too much, and the deep seated fear that you’ll never be enough. but more than anything, its about the fear of being left behind when the people around you start to heal and get better, while you’re still sitting exactly where you were when they first met you. this song holds my most honest fears and my deepest wounds sung over plucky banjo and guitar, and its so beyond special to me (and really scary to share). i hope it resonates, or at the very least, i hope you think it sounds pretty by @maekrell

“i think i’d like to have a daughter” is out now !! i wrote this one after going to a show at red rocks with a friend and sitting next to a mother and her two teenage daughters. they were bickering and laughing like mothers and daughters do, and for a moment, I could see a glimpse of myself in them. I wrote most of the song in the parking lot after the show, sitting on a curb and humming into my voice memos. part love song, part elegy, its a song about loving someone so much, to the point of wishing for invention and advancement, because all you want is to see both of your faces in a child one day. - cover art photo taken by me produced & engineered by: @okayalrightbryce pedal steel: @jodi_worldwide percussion, banjo, mandolin: @okayalrightbryce guitar: me :) mastered by: @mrmaster3000 the eyes that inspired the song <3 one of my favorite photos from the day we got engaged, courtesy of the wonderful @elangbamphoto a scan of a photobooth strip from our favorite place @autophoto <3 matching :) the most beautiful girl in the world, my muse, my favorite person who has ever lived, the love of my life, and the face i hope to see in our kids one day 🫶🏼 by @maekrell
“i think i’d like to have a daughter”, the second song from my sophomore record, will be out this friday, 8/28!! - I never really thought I wanted kids. the idea of taking responsibility for a whole human life and its development is terrifying, and I also never really thought i’d be capable of it. i’m still not so sure i would be, but falling deeply and fully in love with someone makes you start to see the world in a different way. the sky looks brighter, the hard days aren’t necessarily less hard but they do have a comforting presence to them in a way they didn’t before, knowing you’ll come out the other side and have someone who loves you waiting. I wrote this song in the parking lot of red rocks after sitting next to a mom and her teenage daughters at a show. they were laughing and bickering and for the first time, I was able to see a small part of myself in that. It came from a place of both love and mourning. knowing that more than anything, if i were to have a child one day, i’d want it to look like both liz and i, while also knowing that isn’t possible. here’s to hoping science can somehow make it happen, and to falling so in love that you wish for impossible things. by @maekrell

little tour dump from the first show in salt lake city !! i’ve had the time of my life on the road with @jewellboi_ 💌 + its officially been 1 week of “the burden” !! thank you so much for listening and connecting. this song is so special to me, and its also so vulnerable and close to my heart (i’ve almost cried playing it the past few nights). it means the world that you’ve been listening and liking it 📸: the queen herself @becgreenbergphoto by @maekrell
“the burden” is out now !! this one still feels like a bit of a gut punch, even a year after recording it. its also one of my favorite songs from this project and i really wanted it to be what introduces you to the world of this upcoming record. i wrote it after an episode of sleep paralysis (which is unusual for me), and a realization that the body image issues i thought i had outgrown are indeed, still with me. - cover art photo taken by my love, @poetinpearls produced & engineered by: @okayalrightbryce strings: @charlieschnurrmusic pedal steel: @jodi_worldwide percussion, banjo, ebow, bass: @okayalrightbryce mastered by: @mrmaster3000 bryce’s living room in his cutie mountain cabin, where we made the record outtake from the day that we unknowingly shot the single cover. liz and i were working in california and extended a few days since she had never been to big sur. we were driving part of the PCH and saw the most gorgeous wildflowers, so of course we had to pull over. taken on 35mm film 💌 train window views on the way to montreal. i think the window seat is the perfect place to listen to music, and it always inspires me to write by @maekrell
had the perfect afternoon light today, decided to go out and play a bit. “the burden” will be out on 8/6 <3 by @maekrell
