Today at @newnoisemagazine , my interview with Portland’s @magdalene_pdx is live, digging into their third album, 'Ashen.' The record feels like a focused, death-pale snapshot of a band pushing their sound into darker, stranger, and more physically punishing territory. As guitarist/vocalist @iulcif puts it, “Ashen is a focused snapshot of what we are capable of on the spot, only working on our music.” Huge thanks to Iul for going deep on the album’s writing, lyrics, production, artwork, and the strange revival hidden inside the title. @magdalene_pdx is a sludgy, blackened hardcore/screamo band from Portland, Oregon, who have been making a lot of noise lately. I was all juiced up when I heard they had a new album out. Their blend of genres is one I really enjoy. Magdalene takes the darkness of black metal and the grime of death metal and combines it with the weight of sludge and the excitement of hardcore/crust. CHEF'S KISS!

The new album is called ASHEN, and it was released at the very end of last month. The album kicks off with "Climber," which starts with huge walls of harsh noise and distortion alongside a distant clean guitar lick that feels eerie and builds tension. The throaty gutturals bouncing back and forth between your ears let you know something bulky and bestial is on the horizon.

The next track is "Elsmere," and this cut wastes no time, coming in with smashing blast beats and a memorable guitar riff that hurts feelings straight away. I love the crusty D-beat parts with all of my liver-spotted soul. The vocals swing between a reverbed, echoing black metal style and a guttural delivery. The song stays entertaining despite its lengthy runtime.

"Bleed the Ashes" follows with a thrashy punk section that feels right at home on a neocrust album. The riff is so damn catchy that I kept returning to it. The slight blackgaze influence is a great departure from the rest of the tracks and hits all the right spots. Spoiler alert: the ending is a soul-crushing post-metal/sludge composition that holds its ground with the best in the genre.

Next up is "Aqabal," and it is steeped in the frostbitten Norwegian blueprint. I love the clean vocal section that melts into a chugging hardcore passage that goes absolutely crazy.

The song "Canopy" pops off next. There is a strong hardcore influence in some parts, while others take a more avant-garde approach. This band is able to create so many interesting dynamics with just three members. TALENT.

The closing track, "Exhausted," kicks off with a stuttering bass section that quickly erupts into walls of guitars. I love the drumming experimentation here, where the snare confuses you with its slow repetitions. Crushing!

Amazing Album ✨✨✨
