woopsie πŸ™ˆ i inadvertently fell off the internet over december and it kinda just kept rolling through january but what better way to make a comeback than with a little reintroduction, so hi! πŸ₯° i'm lizzie.

i live on the south coast of the uk and i've spent the last few years exploring our waterways from both above and below the water πŸ„πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ€Ώ

i absolutely adore paddleboarding (in all it's forms) and it's given me the freedom to see things and visit places i never would have by foot. i love sharing these experiences in the hope that it might inspire you to do the same πŸ™Š

alongside the adventures, i care deeply about ocean protection and showing how small actions can make a real difference

this is a space for ocean lovers and those still finding their way to it πŸŒŠπŸ’™

if you love the sea, mini adventures, or what to find some practical tips for paddleboarding then i hope you stick around 🦈🀍 xx

(ps - i also like sharks 🦈)

5 of the best beginner-friendly places to paddleboard on the south coast πŸ€™πŸ» save this for your next visit:

1. calshot lagoon 🌊 a beautiful area offering sheltered & calm water located along calshot spit. it's a great place to learn or practice the basics with a small beachy/grass area for family or friends to sit & watch πŸ₯°

best enjoyed around high tide & the water drains out very quickly exposing mudflats which you definitely don't want to get stuck in!

2. fairthorne manor πŸ¦† a quieter, sheltered stretch of the river hamble surrounded by views of the countryside, making it a great place to build confidence without being surrounded by the boats further down river.

they only open when there's enough water so it's also a great place to launch if you're still getting to grips with the tides πŸ₯°

3. poole harbour βš“οΈ a natural harbour that's incredibly popular for watersports! great for beginners as there are plenty of sheltered areas with relatively shallow water to help you build confidence before hitting the open sea

don't confuse sheltered for tideless though! there are strong tidal currents, aim for high tide & stay clear of the harbour entrance & shipping channels

4. fareham creek 🌳 a quieter corner of portsmouth harbour offering you a bit more shelter to be able to practice or build confidence away from the busier solent

best enjoyed around high tide & remember that the creek is part of an internationally important wildlife area, so give the wildlife plenty of space 🐦🦭

5. mudeford harbour πŸ¦€ a beautiful natural harbour perfect for a family day out. there's a green just by the water which is the perfect place for picnics and for any non-paddlers to watch & cheer you on πŸ₯°

stay tuned for part 2! 😏

hope you've found this guide useful, i've tried to keep this as simple as possible so i will just add - as with anything in life, skill & competence levels will vary person to person - so it's important that you do your own research into the locations you're paddling and the equipment that you might need. keeping yourself safe out there should be your first priority 🀍🦈 xx by @magic_beans

5 of the best places to paddleboard in hampshire πŸ€™πŸ» save this for your next visit:

1. river hamble πŸ¦† an incredibly biodiverse area with the chance to spot a whole heap of wildlife, from wading & coastal birds, to deer and even seals if you're lucky! πŸ₯°

best enjoyed around high tide, when the upper hamble becomes accessible

2. portchester castle 🏰 if you love history this one's for you... ancient walls, sheltered waters & a unique perspective of this historic castle from your board

located at the head of the harbour you'll want to aim for high tide & be sure to check the wind before you set off

3. portsmouth harbour βš“οΈ one of my favourite things about paddling around portsmouth is just how much naval history there is to see, and located just off hardway, is a collection of old naval frigates - v cool πŸ€“

a paddle best suited to high tide as the shoreline drys out to soft mud & respect the signage to not touch or board the vessels

4. basingstoke canal 🌳 a beautiful, calm & sheltered spot for exploring hampshire's countryside from the water

at 32 miles long it's perfect for tailoring the route to suit you πŸ₯° you will need a day licence (it is included with @paddleuk on the water membership) and just a note that sups cannot use the locks!

5. haslar creek 🌊 an area that offers a little bit of everything, with the shallow & sheltered waters of alverstoke creek, to the fab views of the spinnaker tower from the marina. there's lots of naval history to look at along the way, including the hms alliance which is part of the royal navy submarine museum πŸ€“

make sure to check the tide & local navigation guidance before setting off & keep off the submarine & surrounding pontoons!

stay tuned for pt2 as there's some real good ones i left off this list! 😏

the best bit about this is knowing i can come back and actually explore inside it too! πŸ€“ what an incredible paddle though, to get to see her up close from the water! πŸ₯°

the first time i inflated my board i was convinced the pump was broken πŸ˜‚ i mean wouldn't you? if the board looked fully inflated, felt firm to touch but the pump gauge hadn't moved off zero...

turns out it's totally normal! most paddleboard pumps won't start registering pressure until your board reaches around 5-8 psi. until then you're actually just filling the board's physical shape, or volume, before you start building the pressure, which is what your pump will display, so if you're standing there thinking your pump is broken, just keep going! 😊

it's just one of the many little things about paddleboarding that seems completely obvious once you know it, but nobody tells you beforehand!

hopefully this can save you the worry if you're just starting out πŸ₯°

longer days, warmer weather & more time out on the water, summer is a beautiful season πŸ₯° here's my top 3 things to remember (that might usually slip your mind)

make sure you've got extra water with you πŸ’¦ you'll be surprised at how thirsty you might get, especially if you're paddling during some of our hotter weather - gotta make sure we're staying hydrated! 😌

wear your spf & pack it in your bag! β˜€οΈ your chances of getting sunburnt are a lot higher when on (or in) the water, as the surface of the water reflects the sunlight back on you - essentially meaning your getting hit from all angles πŸ˜‚ you tend not to notice yourself burning as the coolness of the water or sea breeze can mask it πŸ™ˆ

don't leave your board fully inflated in direct sunlight 🌑 if you're not going to be using the board for a while it's wise to deflate it & pop it either back in it's bag or into your car, out of the sun, until you want to use it again. not only will this stop any chance of your board being damaged by air expansion but it'll also help reduce any heat/sun damage to the glue & seams holding your board together (when it's hot the glue starts to heat up & get tacky, so you may notice seams coming apart or things like your action camera mount starting to peel off πŸ« πŸ˜‚ haha - always check this is firmly still in place before you pop your camera on there!)

a little prep goes a long way in keeping yourself safe out on the water! hope you've found these tips useful, if you've got any others for our UK summers, add them in πŸ€™πŸ»
