J.S. Bachin h-mollimessu to 2.4. klo 19 Tapiolasalissa ~ J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor on Thursday, April 2, at 7 p.m. in the Tapiola Hall

Peter Whelanin johtama Helsingin kamarikuoro ja huippusolistit Kaisa Ranta, Jingjing Xu, Magnus Løvlie ja Asmus Hanke syventyvät yhden musiikkihistorian suurimpien mestariteoksien ytimeen. Vakaasti protestanttinen Bach sävelsi jättimäisen katolisen messunsa Saksin August III:lle tavoitellessaan hovisäveltäjän arvonimeä. Saksi oli protestanttisuuden kivijalka, mutta saadessaan mahdollisuuden Puolan valtaistuimeen Dresdenin vaaliruhtinaat joutuivat kääntymään katolisuuteen. Bachille linkki Dresdenin hoviin tarjosi valttikortin kinastelussa Leipzigin byrokraattien kanssa. Teoksesta kasvoi vuosien varrella valtava ordinarium-messu, joka rikkaudessaan ja kekseliäisyydessään ylittää säveltäjän muut teokset. H-mollimessusta tuli lopulta Bachin musiikillisten ja hengellisten ihanteiden synteesi, todellinen barokkitaiteen ensyklopedia ja monumentti.

The Helsinki Chamber Choir, led by Peter Whelan, and top soloists Kaisa Ranta, Jingjing Xu, Magnus Løvlie, and Asmus Hanke delve into the very heart of one of the greatest masterpieces in music history. A staunch Protestant, Bach composed his monumental Catholic Mass for Augustus III of Saxony in his quest to become court composer. Saxony was a bastion of Protestantism, but upon gaining the opportunity to ascend the Polish throne, the Electors of Dresden were forced to convert to Catholicism. For Bach, the connection to the Dresden court provided a trump card in his disputes with the Leipzig bureaucrats. Over the years, the work grew into a massive Ordinary Mass, which in its richness and ingenuity surpasses the composer’s other works. The Mass in B minor ultimately became a synthesis of Bach’s musical and spiritual ideals, a true encyclopedia and monument of Baroque art.
