Today’s #tbt is a life version excerpt from the latinamerican classic “Alfonsina y el mar” by Ariel Ramírez written to honor poet Alfonsina Storni. A song that contemplates impermanence and transformation that will be included in our upcoming concert @carnegiehall next May 4th as part of the Well-being series.

For Your Consideration, Primero Sueño for Best Contemporary Classical Composition and
Best Engineered Album, Classical

In 1692, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz wrote Primero Sueño, a poem about the soul’s journey through a single night of dreaming. Paola Prestini and Magos Herrera set her words to music for the first time in operatic form, in a processional opera co-created with Louisa Proske and commissioned by MetLiveArts and VisionIntoArt (VIA).

Magos Herrera sings Sor Juana. German vocal ensemble Sjaella (Viola Blache, Franziska Eberhardt, Marie Fenske, Marie Charlotte Seidel, Felicitas Erben and Helene Erben) sing her Sisters. Luca Tarantino plays theorbo and Spanish guitar, and Celso Duarte plays harps, charango and hand percussion.

Produced by Paola Prestini. Recorded at Power Station, NYC, by Alejandro Venguer and mastered by Oscar Zambrano. Out now on VIA Records, made possible with support from NYFA / NYC Women’s Fund.

For #hispanicheritagemonth I had the pleasure of sitting down for this @classicalcalifornia conversation with two dear friends - artists whose work I know and admire firsthand: composer @paolaprestini , and vocalist and composer @magosherrera . I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with both Magos and Paola in the past, and it was especially meaningful to talk with them about Primero Sueño, their innovative new opera inspired by the brilliant 17th-century Mexican poet and thinker Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Our conversation explores how they bring Sor Juana’s voice into the present, weaving together opera, jazz, Mexican musical traditions, and contemporary classical music to create something immersive, boundary-crossing, and entirely their own 🇲🇽🎶❤️

À very special day with my dear @paolaprestini @metmuseum sharing excerpts from our “Primero sueño” ópera on mexican barroque nun Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz poem directed by the one and only @louisaproske . We were hosted by our amazing advisor and Latinamerican art curator at The Met @rjkasl who took us into the rich story behind Sor Juana Ines de Guadalupe painting & the nuns “escudos” luminously reimagined for our opera by @unicorngenius . In beautiful company we shared what’s next for this body of work that we love, stay tuned for our 2027 touring dates and more, and if you haven’t just yet dive into this dream through the album available in all platforms … if you are a Grammy voting member, consider to vote 🙌🏻🎶🙌🏻👇🏼
