From Failure to Freedom: How I Built a Business on My Own Terms.

I fired my boss in 2015. Christi was just 4 months old. The thought of leaving her to build someone else’s dream? I couldn’t do it.

I had been there before. Sitting in a dark storage room, pumping breast milk between meetings, my lowest point in my life! I promised myself: never again.

So, with no backup plan, no money, and no business experience, I took the leap. My first business failed😔Not from lack of passion, but because I didn’t understand marketing. I had no idea how to attract customers or sell.

I had two choices: give up or figure it out.

💡 So I learned. I studied social media and business. I tested, adapted, and things started to change.

Fast forward to today. Christi is a big girl now, and I’m grateful for that leap in 2015. Social media didn’t just make working from home possible, it made success possible.

Now, I help other women do the same.

That’s why I created The Business Socialite Club.
✨ A business that fits into your life.
✨ A business that gives you freedom.
✨ A business that feels aligned with you.

You don’t have to choose between success and freedom. You can have both.

It all started with a stroller she couldn’t sell on Facebook Marketplace. Today, South Africans have earned R1.5 BILLION selling on Yaga! 🤯🇿🇦

I had the pleasure of chatting to the founder of @yagasouthafrica about how she built a business while raising two very young children.

Her kids were just 3 and 1 when she started. Today, she calls Yaga her third baby. 😂

What stood out to me was her belief that women CAN build businesses, raise families and pursue their dreams.

And the opportunities are REAL!

From a R60,000 Rolex sold on the platform to everyday South Africans turning second-hand items into extra income, Yaga is proving that there is money to be made from things we already own.

I love seeing entrepreneurs creating opportunities for other South Africans. ❤️
Also loved the venue @innovationcitycpt

Have you ever bought or sold anything on Yaga? I’d love to hear your experience! 👇 by @magriet.co

Such a pleasure meeting the founder of Yaga ! 🤍

During our conversation, I asked her an interesting question: Why not build a personal brand alongside the business you’re already building?

What followed was a lovely, honest conversation about visibility, putting yourself out there and the opportunities that might come from sharing more of the person behind the business.

And I loved her response! Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to make us consider something we hadn’t thought about before.

Excited to see where her journey takes her!

What do you think? Should founders be more visible on social media, or is it perfectly fine to stay behind the brand? 👇 by @magriet.co

Two Generations. One Timeless Legacy. 🤍

What a remarkable honour to have been recognised as the Bravo! Styllegende at this year’s Bravo! Revlon Styl-ikoon celebration.

My heartfelt congratulations to the beautiful Rolanda Marais on being crowned the 2026 Bravo! Revlon Styl-ikoon. A truly deserving recognition.

A touching but appreciative moment was discovering that Rolanda had selected a skirt designed by my brother, Errol Arendz, in the 1980s as part of her wardrobe choice for this nomination. More than four decades later, my brother’s creativity remains a treasured part of her wardrobe as well as that of so many others!

This accolade was a beautiful reminder that true style transcends time, and that the work we create and live by will continue to inspire for generations to come.

I am truly touched by what happened yesterday.

My sincere and lifelong gratitude to Bravo!, kykNET and Revlon for this wonderful recognition they honoured me with and for continuing to celebrate the remarkable talent and rich history of South African fashion.

What a privilege to be part of this story. 🤍 by @magriet.co

We challenged the team to recreate a Springbok rugby player’s iconic dance moves, and let’s just say we have different levels of talent outside of marketing! 🇿🇦🏉😂

Who do you think nailed the dance best? 👀 by @magriet.co

I said matric farewells have gone too far.

I take it back. 😅

After more than 1,600 comments on my last video, I started looking at it differently.

Because all that money being spent doesn’t simply disappear.

The dress supports a designer or seamstress.
The makeup artist gets paid.
The photographer gets booked.
The hairdresser, nail tech, venue, car hire… all small businesses benefiting from one night.

A matric farewell is almost a mini economic boom. 😂

Maybe the problem isn’t that people spend too much.

Maybe the problem is when we start believing that spending that much is compulsory.

If you can afford to go big and you WANT to go for it. Make the memories. ❤️

And if you can’t? There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying no.

That might be one of the best lessons we can teach our children too.

But can we at least agree on this one thing… matric farewell season is GREAT for small business. 😂

Seven years ago, I had 2,000 followers, no money in the bank, no business… and absolutely NO idea what I was doing.

But there I was, standing on a stage, teaching people about Instagram. 😅

Was I qualified enough? Probably not.
Did I know everything? Definitely not.
Was I terrified of being judged? ABSOLUTELY.

But I showed up anyway.

Today, looking back at this Facebook memory, I realise something that I wish more women understood:

You don’t become confident and THEN take action. You become confident BECAUSE you take action.

I was 39. I wasn’t the youngest in the room. I wasn’t the most experienced. And I certainly wasn’t the most confident.

But I knew that if I wanted my life to change, I had to do something different.

And those people I was so afraid would judge me?

I can’t even remember their names today.

Yet that one decision to show up, scared and unprepared, helped build the business and life I have today.

So here’s what I want to tell you:

Stop waiting for permission.
Stop waiting to feel ready.
Stop waiting until you’ve got it all figured out.

Seven years from now, you could be looking back at the moment you finally decided to back yourself.

Or you could still be waiting.

❤️ Tell me in the comments: What’s ONE thing you would do right now if you weren’t so afraid of being judged? by @magriet.co

More than 50% of the people who answered my Instagram poll associated Checkers with the Springboks.

But Checkers isn’t the official sponsor. Pick n Pay is and apparently paying R70 million a year.

So how did Checkers build such a strong connection in people’s minds?

By staying relevant, joining cultural moments, using social media well and becoming part of the conversation around South African rugby.

That’s the lesson for small businesses too.

You may not have the biggest budget, but you can still become memorable if you understand your audience, speak their language and show up in the right conversations.

You can buy exposure. You still have to earn relevance.

What do you think, is this one of the smartest examples of brand marketing in South Africa?

Lets chat in the comments.

PS I’m not associated with any of the brands mentioned in this video. I’m a social media strategist, and I break down how brands use marketing and social media so small business owners can learn from it. by @magriet.co
