POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
@green_parrot_swaffham

The end result of our community weaving project earlier this year using recycled yarns.
What a privilege to sit alongside new weavers and hear their stories woven into this piece.
Thank you for such a warm welcome to weave in this delightfully welcoming and warm cafe. It was almost sad when we finished!

Recent explorations

Holes, spaces, as usual!
Inclusion of dried plants from my local environment, some are smelling nice in their dried form

These are all evolving and the best way to hang is yet to be decided

Yarn almost exclusively my romney yarn from sheep I shepherded

Dyed yarn from the most marvellous rainbow romney yarn present I ever had. @thewoodlandhaberdasher all hand spun, hand dyed

Pleasure level: deep joy

Fen Ditton Gallery

Some unexpected time led me here today. Beautiful work by three generations of weavers. Interesting to hear of some of links between these weavers. Driving home I was inspired to think about my own projects and how to extend and develop them. Let's go weaving! by @magsatlarge

The objective was to weave fabric for a lampshade, but all I could think about was remembering how to hem stitch, as I very often just twist the threads right up to the end of the cloth.

Really enjoyed slowing down with this technique and seeing what came about. Think I will be making a whole range of these for the studio windows!

As usual, I enjoyed the connection of my romney yarn all the way from conception to weaving, joyful weaving indeed.

Tidying up the studio

It's not been a tidy Summer and I've ploughed on with commissions, fashion show pieces and a whole range of cotton scarves without any clearing away at all. I claimed it was too hot...well the loom did migrate outside in late afternoons.
Now the problem is the roses and the fact I still find them so beautiful @soulstarstories
The petals are dropping, the leaves curled and the spiders have set up home!

In other news I had a lovely Saturday @westacregallery
I had delightful conversations, met new and old friends, sold stock and manned the demo loom.

Thank you to everyone that came along, you all warmed my heart and I came home grinning. by @magsatlarge

Multi weaving from Estonia @freeweaver_studio in London

Students from Pallas University of applied sciences in Estonia worked collaboratively with their professor to develop this unusual style of weaving. The loom is made by laser cutting patterns and it works a bit like a meccano set so that you can make any shape you want.

Thanks Janine for describing the evolution of this loom and showing me how to construct a 3d piece. It's all done by hand and definitely has potential even though it is time consuming. What fun! The final piece is both heavy and tactile. by @magsatlarge

Postcards from Dent in Cumbria

I've tried to weave my memories of a few days spent here. I ran out of warp to include the mossy boulders of Flintergill Gill and the curlew. It was great to include yarn that the local farm had sent to the mill, both Swaledale and Blue Faced Leicester. I had to use my romney as the warp because the hairy Swale and BFL were now where near strong enough.

Starting with narrow cobbled streets with tractors skillfully weaving their way through

The church dominating the view with a partial tin roof and hillside views beyond

Silage making in full flow, cut, tended and rowed ready to bale

Cotton grass on fells demarkated by dry stone walls. Low stocking rates of Swaledales and North Country mules ( Swale crossBFL). Bracken & foxgloves.

The steps next to the river bridge alongside yhe flower rich flower hay fields

2 pairs of chatty jackdaws in the cottage stone wall

The swifts screaming through the streets and church yard

Really enjoyed the project before Dent is but a distant memory

Burns Beck Moss @cumbriawildlifetrust

A treasure trove of an incredible ecosystem restored in 2024. I loved the almost poetic signage. 'Cindarella habitat', a fusion of fen, swamp & mires. The more I watched the more I found myself immersed in it. What a treat!

My list, aided by flora incognito & books, included a significant number of new finds for me. Exciting.

Marsh cinquefoil
Marsh thistle
Marsh valerian
Marsh housework
Marsh willowherb
Marsh bedstraw
Branched bur-reed
Water horsetail
Water mint
Water lolly, yellow
Round- fruited rush?
Broad leaf captain
Common reed
Ragged Robin
Forgetmenot
Fen ragwort
Foxgloves
Orchid...too far away to ID
Purple loose strife (sp?!)
Yellow ketchup ( species?)
Curlew, sedge warbler, reed bunting
Common darter ?, red admirals, heath butterflies
Hover flies ( noisy!)
Blue damsel flies
Grasshopper, landing next to me
Golden Ring Tailed Dragonfly , likes small running acidic streams, the female is uks longest dragon fly, a beauty! by @magsatlarge

The weaving stones at Flinter Gill

'Dancing the flags' involved getting your woven fabric thoroughly wet with your bare feet on these limestone flat slabs. 'Waulking' the cloth is another name for fulling where the fibres tighten up to produce a denser cloth.

Mountain sorrel was growing on some of the rocks and tree stumps...tasty! As you descended into the Gill there was the distinctive fragrance of a lot of wild garlic, which obviously flowers much later up here.

A fabulous place for a fashion shoot...

I have bought some Dent Swaledale & some Blue Faced Leicester yarn (this cross produces the north country mule, much sought after) to weave something to remind me of this wonderful place with its rich history. by @magsatlarge

A garment that came about very quickly

Today I happened to show @saorished my netting fabric I had recently finished. The inevitable, what will it be, question arose. I had a dress with me as I needed to buy cotton to take the hem up. Within 5 minutes the dress was on the mannequin, the net was draped over and a garment plan hatched! Thanks Kim! I tied it together with the orange ties rather than sewed it and even had enough for a separate scarf.
The netting was part of my curiosity about holes and was intended to show the warp off, in particular some irregularly dyed threads. It didn't do this but I am happy with the new outfit!
