THE BRUNCH SHIFT by Adrienne Thurman @adriennethurman illustrated by Mags DeRoma @magsderoma

The sun is starting to rise and a little girl and her Mama are headed off to the diner where Mama works. Mama does everything she can to invoke the imagination of the girl while she waits for her. They try catching art thieves before they strike again. They picture themselves in a bountiful creek while washing dishes. However, as the day goes on the girl imagines herself like the other families at the diner. She wants a morning on the couch. She wants an afternoon at the park. She wants somebody else’s Saturday.

This is a heartwarming story about the power of imagination, and an ode to parents who still find the energy to create magic in their children’s lives.

A beautiful story about a single mother who must take her daughter to work with her at the diner on Saturdays. To make it fun, the two spin imaginative stories–and they are the stars! A Chair for My Mother meets Last Stop on Market Street in this touching picture book about working parents.

The lazy sun peeks out from the clouds as Mama and her daughter wait for their cross-town bus. Saturdays aren’t for sleeping in. Saturdays are for the egg crackin’, pancake flippin’, orange juicin’ brunch shift. A shift Mama can’t afford to miss. To pass the time, Mama and her daughter tell stories– first, they’re brave knights escaping a dragon as they hop on the bus. Later, as they do the dishes, they’re digging for gold during the gold rush!

Sometimes, though, the girl imagines herself with the families in Mama’s section– cheersing with hot cocoa before they head to the park. Sometimes she wishes she had someone else’s Saturday.

Here is an ode to working parents everywhere, and an ode to the magic of childhood and the power of a parent’s love. by @magsderoma

It’s here!! I have been waiting soooo patiently after finishing the art, making eggs and coffee and other stuff, while the bookmakers make the books and it has happened, beautifully, magically, and I can now hold it in my hands. ✨

The Brunch Shift, written by the delightful @adriennethurman and illustrated by me, and published by the Cracker Jack team at @randomhousestudio @penguinkids @penguinrandomhouse Annie, Paula and Rachel ❤️ I’m grateful for your support and guidance.

It’s a story about a Mama and her intrepid daughter as they spend the day in the diner where Mama works. The day is loooong, but Mama is a clever story weaver and keeps her little one engaged and imaginative with make believe adventures morning to evening. It is a love letter to hard working Mamas, and to kiddos that come along for the day, and when I first read it, I wanted to squeeze it. I remember going to work with my mom (she taught gymnastics, so honestly I wanted to go!: foam pit!) and I have brought my kids to work with me over the years and the jobs, many times to little sighs. Once, I even gave a presentation to my boss while holding my eldest when he was a baby. We do what we need to do to make it all work, sometimes.

This book sweet and real and honest and full of feelings and importantly, a ton of fun. 💙 oh, and there is a dragon. 🐲

Met a spider yesterday 🕷️
Do you know about the delightful Louise Bourgeois? One of my favorite artists. Daughter of tapestry repair artists, she made giiiiiant sculptures of spiders to honor her mother, the weaver.
