Immigrants operate on two different time zones. One is the standard time of the place they are currently living in, and the second of their homeland.
Immigrants are torn into pieces. A part of them never leaves their homeland. It stays back. I was not born in Iran, but a part of me is still missing. A part that is in Iran.
These days whenever I wake up in the morning, before opening my eyes, I open social media apps for videos of the revolution that has been going on for almost a month in Iran. (It has actually been a long time coming). I watch Videos of my sisters and brothers in Iran standing up to the dictatorship, risking their lives for a chance at a better life. I see videos of protests, I read the names of the people arrested, and I see photos of human beings, young and old, brutally killed by the Islamic State's guards. Then I go to work.
These days' work is: rehearsing a new show. Well, when I say new.. We were postponed once due to Omicron, but we are back now.
Talking about doing a show while seeing what is happening in Iran is hard, but I want to say this.
These wonderful people are like a family to me. I love having this experience with them. Brilliant artists that I have learned from and will continue to learn from. They are much more than colleagues. They graciously support me and allow me to vent, cry, and share my frustrations as I navigate the real feelings of having my country go through something significant. They understand. We all come from different countries that are going through something similar to an extent, which has helped our retelling of the story of the early days of the American invasion of Iraq in this play.
We have formed what I think are life-long friendships, and just as they held me close and tight during these times, I hope one day I can return the favour and be a friend to them whenever they need it.
The show we are rehearsing is called Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. It is a brilliant piece written by Rajiv Joseph. The amazing Rouvan Silogix directs it at @crowstheatre with @moderntimesstage. you can come to see us from October 11th until Nov 6th. by @mahsaerf
