Over the last month, I had the pleasure of covering the role of Lauretta during the rehearsal process of @classiclyricarts’ GIANNI SCHICCHI. This Sunday, January 11, Brooklyn Art Song Society presents Leoš Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared, a landmark early-20th-century song cycle that is still heard relatively infrequently in concert. New York–based soprano Maia Sumanaweera makes her BASS debut in this performance. Known for her poetic sensitivity and attention to emotional detail, she has appeared in leading operatic roles with Mannes Opera, Opera UCLA, and Classic Lyric Arts, and recently made her debut with GRAMMY-nominated ensemble Seraphic Fire. Also making her BASS debut, mezzo-soprano Katherine Lerner Lee brings a versatile career spanning art song, contemporary music, chamber repertoire, and opera. Described as “lyricism personified,” she is a dedicated advocate for text-driven repertoire, with recent highlights including premieres of new works, performances with Opera Essentia and Concerts on the Slope, and a growing presence on New York recital stages.Mezzo-soprano Katherine Lerner returns to BASS following an international operatic career that has included five seasons as a Dramatic Mezzo at Landestheater Linz, with major roles such as Kundry, Azucena, Klytämnestra, and Brängane. A former member of the Ryan Opera Center, she has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera and leading orchestras across the U.S., and is equally respected as a powerful recitalist and interpreter of dramatic repertoire.Tenor Dylan Morrongiello returns to BASS after past appearances with the company, bringing a career that spans major operatic stages and a wide-ranging concert repertoire. Known for his “live-wire” performances, he has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera and with companies across the U.S., and continues to balance core repertory with new works and recital programs centered on art song.Pianist Brent Funderburk is a longtime member of the BASS family and a trusted collaborator on our stage. Novafeltria in stills ❤️Here, life was hot sunny days filled with classes and rehearsals at the school and theater down the main road, coffee and pastries at Lattevino, long lunches and dinners usually full of bolognese, ricotta-filled tortelli, and different meats, countryside views, gelato, singing lots of Bellini, working with the most supportive colleagues both as a singer and as an admin, and smiles, jokes and conversations in Italian with the kind and generous locals - some of whom remembered me and addressed me by name when I came into their shops. This is how it was when I went in 2022, this is how it is now, and this is how it will remain in my memory forever. Reflecting on a whirlwind December with @seraphic_fire. I spent 2.5 weeks touring Florida and Vermont, performing 16 concerts with these phenomenal performers and I couldn’t be prouder of completing my first professional ensemble work. Ever since my in person undergrad days at UCLA were cut tragically short by COVID, I haven’t had the chance to perform in a top-tier choral ensemble, and I am feeling so thankful for getting to do this.
