From yesterday's Space in African Studies event at McGill University. We learned a lot from the presentations by Mai Abu Salih and Zainab Gaafar on the urban heritage of Khartoum, and we were moved again from watching the film 'Khartoum'. We were lucky to have one of the co-directors, Timeea Mohammed with us for a post film discussion. I’m pleased to share that my essay “From Nubia to Khartoum: The Politics of Constructing the Sudan National Museum” was just published in Docomomo Journal Issue 74 “Imperfect Modernism.” I’m grateful to the editors at @docomomointernational Uta Pottgiesser and Wido Quist as well as guest editors Kateryna Didenko and Liutauras Nekrosius for their thoughtful engagement that really helped develop this piece. This research was conducted as a part of the documentation work of @docomomosdn

The museum had been preparing for its first full rehabilitation since it was inaugurated in 1971 when the war broke out in April 2023. In the months to come, the museum would repeatedly become a symbol for the impact that cultural heritage has deeply suffered in this war. In April 2023, it was damaged by fire, as reported by the Cultural Heritage Monitoring Lab and the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative. Viral videos in June 2023 showed the Rapid Support Forces breaking into the garden and the bioarchaeology laboratory where ancient mummies had been stored. By March 2025, after SAF regained control of Khartoum from the RSF, it was reported that thousands of priceless antiquities were looted from the museum’s collection of over 100,000 artifacts.

In this essay, I wanted to tie these recent news reports of what is happening in Sudan to the history of the museum and the politics of how it came to be constructed. I was interested in exploring how this history reveals the interplay between architecture, power, and national identity. All these political influences cannot be separated from the museum, rendering it an archive of critical moments that shaped the country.
